Songs that make you FEEEEL

Recommended Posts

Guest E.C

Here's an interesting one. Pick the best example you can think of for a song which makes you feel each of the following:

Happy: (Songs where you just think WAYHEYYYYYY! LIFE, EH?)

Sad (Bonus points if you've cried while listening to it):

Angry (to listen to whilst angry, not a song that makes you angry, or maybe that as well):

Sleepy (or rather...to help you sleep):

Not looking for definitive answers here, as there arent any. Music can make you sad/happy based on lyrical content, musical arrangement or just a memory/situation it reminds you of. Obviously, with the subjective nature of music, some 'happy' songs may appear 'sad' to others. I will start off this potential "only emo kids cry over songs" abuse tirade with:

Happy: You! Me! Dancing by Los Campesinos

Sad: Valentine by Christie Front Drive

Angry: I Wish You the Best by Ed Gein

Sleepy: Post-War by M. Ward

(bonus cool points for name dropping bands nobody has heard of/gives a fuck about!!!)

There's an appropriate Sleater-Kinney song for all of these.

Happy: Oh! or Words and Guitar or I Wanna Be Your Joey Ramone

Sad: Jenny or The Size of Our Love

Angry: Entertain

Okay so there isn't a sleepy one. For that I'll go with

Mogwai: Take Me Somewhere Nice

Happy Jamaica Jerk-Off by Elton John

Sad Anthems for a Seventeen Year Old Girl by Broken Social Scene

Angry Anchor by Misery Signals

Sleepy Generally I don't like to fall asleep to music: if I like a song it won't make me sleepy. I'll go with Clair De Lune by Debussy if pushed, though.

I done too many songs. But I don't care.

Happy: "Heatwave" - Martha Reeves & The Vandellas. Just pure pleasure from start to finish.

Also:

"Higher And Higher" - Jackie Wilson

Hounds Of Love - The Futureheads

You Make My Dreams - Hall & Oates

Sad: "The Biggest Lie" - Elliott Smith. I was kinda late to the party with Elliott, apart from a few songs here and there it's only really been in the past 4 years or so that I really discovered him, but I think his songs have genuinely affected me, and they've helped me through some stuff.

Also:

"Lover, You Should've Come Over" - Jeff Buckley

"The Lonely Shepherd" - Gheorghe Zamfir (from Kill Bill)

"Broken" - JJ72

Angry: "The Gentle Art of Making Enemies" by Faith No More. Basically whenever I have a shit day I get in my car and put on Faith No More as loud as the stereo will go and scream my lungs out on the drive home. I usually feel a lot better by the time I arrive!

Also:

"Kill Before You're Killed" - Deadloss MF Superstar

Sleepy: Anything by Nightmares On Wax or Zero 7. They're my sleepy albums.

Sad - Mama Take My Hand, Aloe Blacc.

It's the story of a mans relationship with his mother, and is one of the most moving songs I have ever heard. Makes even more sense when you have a child.
