Yes. You've cracked it. Thanks for revealing this to me.

Any time, pal. Chart music is current music that's popular at the moment, we've established that by now. But if it wasn't for the xfactor, we'd still have a variety of genres coming in. Rock n roll is dying out, but it'll come back in!

I saw Earl Sweatshirt and Kendrick Lamar at Primavera Sound this past weekend. I think they might have been the only hip hop acts on the bill. Earl was pretty good, Kendrick was incredible. Definitely in the my top 3 acts of the weekend. He got one of the biggest and most enthusiastic crowds I saw too. Primavera Sound always has good hip hop acts but only ever a handful at most. Hip hop acts don't seem to come here in general very often.

I didn't enjoy Earl Sweatshirt at all, a 15 min intro and then another 10 mins of nonsense and half tunes before I gave up and went off to see someone else.

After (some of) Wu-Tang and Killa Mike in 2013 I was hoping for more hip hop this year. With Jurassic 5, De La Soul and Outkast all touring Europe this summer it feels like a trick was missed.

I missed the first 20 mins or so of Earl. I wouldn't describe anything I saw as nonsense or half tunes. There were quite a few I didn't know but overall I enjoyed his performance a lot.

Outkast were strongly rumoured and I was disappointed they weren't on the line up at the time it was announced. Looking at their tour dates though I guess it just wasn't possible. They're still touring in the US just now. Jurassic 5 came here for Sonar last year, De La Sould would have been great.

It's a pity that Boiler Room didn't include any hip hop acts on their stage.

However, nothing would have beat Kendrick.

Maybe it was just a dodgy start, I was looking forward to it but it took too long to get going for me. I left while he was doing Molasses and trying to get the crowd to sing the RZA lines.

So what good albums are there from this year? Either it's been a crappy year for hip hop or I've just no been paying attention, or possibly a mix of both. Freddie Gibbs is really the only one that stands out for me.

I've been on a big binge of my favourite hip hop albums this week. Does any track on Illmatic ever get old? I'd also forgotten how much I love Supreme Clientele.

Recently, I can't get enough of this album, cos of this song...

Particularly Nas's verse

A drug dealer's dream
Stash CREAM keys on a triple beam
Five hundred SL green, ninety-five nickle gleam
Condominium, thug dressed like a gentleman
Tailor made ostrich, Chanel for my women friend
Murderin, numbers on your head while I'm burglarin
Shank is servin em, whassup to all my niggaz swervin in
New York metropolis, the Bridge brings apocalypse
Shoot at the clouds feels like, the holy beast is watchin us

Mad man my sanity is goin like an hourglass
Gun inside my bad hand I sliced tryin to bag grams
I got hoes that used to milk you
Niggaz who could've killed you
Is down with my ill crew of psychoes
Nas Escobar movin on your weak production
Pumpin corruption in the third world we just bustin

Fucking amazing.

On that note Raekwon's verse is fucking mental, even more so when you read it and see the weird way he rhymes everything.

Hold up and analyze the wildcats slang cracks
They swing an axe, the new routines, be my eyes blacks
Playing corners glancing all up in your cornea
Corner ya, seen cats snatch monies up on ya
But late night, candlelight fiend with a crack pipe
It's only right, feeling higher than an airplane right
Word yo, I want to get this money then blow
Take my time, blast a nine, if you front you go
Sip beers, the German ones, hand my guns to sons
Shaolin, and Queensbridge we robbing niggas for fun
But still, write my will out to my seeds then build
Mahalia sing a tale but the real we still kill

Yo...what you thought punk, shit was sweet, now you can't sleep
Gotta keep ya eyes open wide and hide ya face from the streets
I'm like the beast with a warrant, far from alarmin'
Gave you fair warnin' now you on the stairs swallin'
I'm callin' out any rapper that I doubt, smack 'em in the mouth
Throw 'em in the yoke, BOOM!, then I knock 'em out
No doubt, Freddie Foxxx files 20-shot auto glock, BLAAOW!
Benny blind Puerto Rock style
Wit' a twist of black in the brow, twist ya cap and I'm out
Sleep wit' the fish-dips for yappin' too loud
What's happenin' now? Niggaz is hard as hell but they Gargamels
Pickin' on the smallest victim gives 'em heart to kill
My squad is real and holds it down the hardest regardless
Besides of the largest, we polish the floor
with the rawest hardcore artists
Flawless victory you niggaz can't do shit to me
Physically lyrically hypothetically realistically
I'm the epitome of catchin' wreck, catch you when you cash your check
Smash you when you pass then jack you for your fuckin' Lex
Nothin' less than the best if the squad did it
Hard-headed niggaz better beware and fear like God said it

Are we posting beasting verses? Because I'm all over that.

AZ's on Life's a Bitch is pretty tough to top, imo:-

Visualizin the realism of life and actuality
Fuck who's the baddest a person's status depends on salary
And my mentality is, money orientated
I'm destined to live the dream for all my peeps who never made it
cause yeah, we were beginners in the hood as five percenters
But somethin must of got in us cause all of us turned to sinners
Now some, restin in peace and some are sittin in San Quentin
Others such as myself are tryin to carry on tradition
Keepin the schwepervesence street ghetto essence inside us
Cause it provides us with the proper insight to guide us
Even though, we know somehow we all gotta go
but as long as we leavin thievin we'll be leavin with some kind of dough
so, and to that day we expire and turn to vapors
me and my capers-ll be somewhere stackin plenty papers
Keepin it real, packin steel, gettin high
Cause life's a bitch and then you die

This album came on shuffle the other day. Was reminded how great it is. The most backpacker-est hipster hop there ever was.

I totally dig Yoni/Why?/Clouddead alot. That record is great. This is my favourite track he has been involved in:

Also, the Freddie Gibbs/Madlib LP is badass. My favourite hiphop record of the year so far.
