Huw
I know this is the only hip hop artist, but has anybody listened to the new Aesop Rock album - Skelethon? Few tracks in, the production is mad good. The second song has a definite loose RjD2 feel about the drums. Great.

Paranoid Android
What do people think about Death Grips? Being cool and sticking it to the man? Or shitey twats out for attention?
french_disko
I have no idea if Death Grips are playing the game or sticking it to the man - all I know is that I downloaded the album, stuck it in iTunes & now have an album cover with the photo of an erect penis coming up on my iPod at times.Album is available here for download - http://t.co/ouZtWGGa
french_disko
GZA/Genius - Liquid SwordsBought that album (again) last week - this was the reissue with the bonus instrumental disk and, rather awesomly, a chess set.http://www.amazon.co.uk/Liquid-Swords-The-Chess-Box/dp/B008861R7S/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1349265296&sr=8-

Paranoid Android
The new Kendrick Lamar is getting a lot of very good reviews. I've only listened a couple of times but it does sound like a step up from Section.80 which I liked a lot anyway.
Murrr
I'm all over Kendrick's album at the moment. It's excellent, better than Section.80 which I really loved. Already one of my favourites of the year after 5-6 listens. I just love the overall narrative. It almost plays like a concept album: he starts off young and naive to the dangers of his city, there's a huge eureka moment around the middle of the CD, then by the time Compton (what a BANGER, by the way) hits he's pretty much come full circle. Not to mention the production's better, the storytelling's better, the songs are more immediately memorable...The only thing I don't really like at the moment is the hook on Real. Holy Christ, that's bad, but who listens to hip-hop for hooks anyway?
Paranoid Android
What are your other top hip hop albums this year murr? I haven't really been keeping up.
Murrr
El-P, Killer Mike and Death Grips (Money Store) are probably my thee favourites, but you've probably heard them? Those aside...Ab-Soul, Control System. Kendrick's label-mate. A real deep-thinking-but-still-street LP, a tad spacier and less-refined than Kendrick.P.O.S., We Don't Even Live Here. Only came out on Monday, but huge forward-thinking rebel sounds.Aesop Rock, Skelethon. His usual dense, metaphorical content over huge, self-produced beats.Lushlife, Plateau Vision. Lots of live instrumentation. Epic, lush beats with throwback '90s vocals. Shouldn't work, but it does.Dark Time Sunshine, ANX. I've heard this described as "the Postal Service of hip-hop," which is hard to argue.Apollo Brown & OC, Trophies. I haven't heard throwback beats of this quality in a long time. I'm not usually into nostalgic stuff, but this is top.Clouds Casino, Instrumental 2. Not strictly hip-hop, I suppose, but haunting, spacey beats that sounds much better without the awful rappers he produces for.Heems, Nehru Jackets. The slightly-more-interesting-one from Das Racist's mixtape, as wild as you'd expect.Joey Bada$$, 1999. Outrageous tape. 17/18 year old MC going effortlessly over beats from DOOM, Dilla, Lord Finesse, etc.Reks, Rebelutionary. Potent protest music from one of the most under-rated MCs in the game.Schoolboy Q, Habits & Contradictions. Another of Kendrick's labelmates. Lyrically-derivative, you might hate it, but it's so much fun.Gangrene, Vodka & Ayahuasca. Oh No and Alchemist take turns making beats and rhyming. Works best when Al is producing and Oh No is rapping.I don't think I've forgotten anything. Great year for hip-hop so far, and there's still stuff from Saigon, Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire, Apollo Brown & Guilty Simpson, Murs & 9th Wonder, Big Boi, Roc Marciano, Ghostface and Talib Kweli to come.
Paranoid Android
Cheers for all that!Yeah Killer Mike was my stand clear stand out of the year, before Kendrick anyway. I've got Death Grips but I actually never really got into the album aside from a couple of individual tracks I really like. The ab-soul album is quite good but not listened to it enough.I downloaded the Joey Bada$$ tape this morning actually after asking the same question somewhere else. Pretty sure I have already heard and liked a track or two off it. Also got the Schoolboy Q waiting to be listened to.

Murrr
I've got Money Store and Ex Military from spotify, going through Money Store just now. Can't find any sign of No Love on here, though...?xxNLDW is only available as a free download at the moment. Even the band themselves aren't sure if it'll ever get a commercial release. You can get it here: http://thirdworlds.net/main/death.php. A warning, though. Don't click on that if you're at work: the album artwork's a bit dodgy (hint: it's a penis).I like all of their releases, but The Money Store is probably my favourite. NLDW is a different feel, more negative and abrasive and the beats are quite minimalistic, but still excellent.

KarmaTsunami
The Kendrick album is great. I've probably just listened to more hip-hop and rap this year than I have in previous years but there will be a fair few albums jostling for position in my end of year top 10. Killer Mike, Death Grips and El-P included.
