TR!ΔNGL€ T€€TH
So, the new Decemberists album is out today, what are people's thoughts on it? I'm streaming it the now on Spotify and it sounds pretty nifty, gone are the prog excesses of The Hazards of Love (no bad thing of course). beetlejuice
I absolutely love The Crane Wife and The Hazards of Love. Streamed the new one earlier and again, The Decemberists have knocked it right out of the park. Sounds pretty damn amazing to me. Must go and buy a copy after my exam tomorrow.Looking forward to the Glasgow gig even more now!
girl anachronism
I just got it home and am on my first listen, they've really gone and made another brilliant album. Not missing the prog. Don't Carry It All is an ace opener. Gillian Welch's voice sounds great too.
TR!ΔNGL€ T€€TH
It's a great record, with hints of Springsteen, R.E.M. and early Decemberists going on.
KarmaTsunami
I'm loving it. Really, really loving it. Welch's vocals are ace and I'm glad they got rid of the excess from The Hazards of Love as I wasn't too keen on it.
Christy
The Hazards of Love is one of the best albums I've ever heard, s I'm very glad that they didn't try and emulate it at all. The King is Dead is far more concise and, for want of a better word, poppy.I absolutely love it; it is already my second favourite Decemberists album. Massively influenced by REM and The Waterbioys, who are two of my all-time favourite bands. Peter Buck plays guitar on the second track, which bears a heavy resemblance to early REM. I can't listen to it without hearing Talk About The Passion: Rox in the Box lifts the melody from The Raggle Taggle Gypsy wholesale: It is a traditional folk song, covered by hunners of artists over the years. The Decemberists are honouring their debt to Celtic folk by taking it on!A quite brilliant record.

Shaki
I did a back-to-back double listen yesterday. Wonderfully good. Certainly a more straight forward album. Instantly accessible. Glad to hear it dripping with harmony vocals. A beautiful thing. Roll on 5th March. Yes. 5/
TR!ΔNGL€ T€€TH
It's a super addictive album, I hope I don't wear out my fondness for it by over listening to it.

Pierre Von Mondragon
I liked the last album muchly, and 'Repaid' is one of the best things I heard for years, but the comparisons and influences bandied about here rather make it seem that I won't be in for this one. Its just my personal musical cosmology, I'll try and at least hear it, but don't really anticipate a result, suppose I could be wrong, Also gotta say that I considered the last one to be much more folk-rock than prog, closest it got was that wee Deep Purpley freak out that was 'The Crossing'. Bugger all like the shite I associate with that description.
Christy
Jennee's organ sounds are vaguely prog-y, and there are certainly elements of straight up classic rock in Colin's riffing on Hazards, but it is in no way a prog album. Not even close. It's a very British folk-rock record. And a goddamn amazing one!Pierre - just get the new album and give it a chance. It is everything you would hope for in a Decemberists record. beetlejuice
Barrowlands gig was all kinds of awesome.Indeed it was. I had high expectations, and I'm pleased to say they were surpassed. And The Mariner's Revenge was epic!
mmd040
Did they perform a marriage ceremony on stage in Glasgow? They did in Oakland but that may have been because it was Valentines Day.
Christy
Nope, but they did play California One and Won't Want For Love. I'll take that trade-off.
