Aberdeen music shop scene

I find it really shit that all hmv' date='virgin, one up sell metal and yet refuse to play it instore on the speakers, to me this is a total hipocrasy that whilst these shops think its ok to sell these cds and yet not give them any air time.....

How do they expect to sell metal cds when they dont play them hell they might even find more fans to endorse the metal scene. To me its like yeah ok we will take your money but dont ask us to play that shit and that really sucks the big one.

All in all i really do think whilst most of the media/retailers turn a blind eye to the metal community the metal scene will suffer even more than it is currently. Why the fuck does metal get so little mention? Is it because its not melodic enough? Maybe its a parental thing? Fuck knows but im real sick of it[/quote']

Shops sell paracetamol but never advertise it, is that hypocritical (note the spelling)?

Saturday afternoon ... you walk into Blockbuster with your son/daughter niece / nephew to look for a cartoon or a U certified film....

They are showing - Hardcore slasher film / Softcore porn film / Shrek

Which is appropriate?

However Monday night. It`s the boss' day off. Bored staff are watching Battle Royal uncut around Tea time.

Maybe Monday`s are the way to go.

Yea, i kinda understand where your coming from, heavy music doesnt get a lot of regognition, especialy in the mainstream record stores/buying public. Although it doesnt bother me unduly, i would think some of the less brutal metal stuff could get played now an then in the mainstream shops (and no im not talking about linking park and the related pop metal faction)

I dont understand about the one up thing though. I've wandered in there a few times and seen extreme metal being promoted, i.e. the carcass choice cuts was recently in one of the sampler cd players... and although they are pretty well known its still some promotion of extreme music.

Also i've been in a few times when I've heard them blasting some heavy stoner and some hardcore from the shop speakers which was nice to hear...

Personaly I accepted a while ago that alot of the music i listen to is never going to be accepted by most people, and im happy with that. Even some of the non heavy stuff i hear very rarely in shops, its why we have cd players mate.

When i worked in a video shop, i was told the highest rating of film we were allowed to sho by law was a 12 certificate. I also know this is the case at hmv as when i was having problems with a 15 dvd i was told they could only put it on to the part that was playing up due to the rating of the film. (of course after 8pm it was usual to shove on a 15 film)

Well in 1990 after my first ever job interview I walked down to One Up in Diamond Street. It just so happens that they were playing the Acid Reign LP and that was my fav at the time (it was slightly obscure & 2 nd rate thrash metal). I was rather happy and ended up getting the job...

One Up are great for putting on varied music and they let WBL play in there too who, let's face it, aren't exactly family friendly music listening, not because there's heaps of swearing or anything just that it's loud and shouty.

If you want to hear metal songs in the shops you go in, buy yourself a portable CD/MP3/Minidisc player, then EVERY shop you go in will be playing it! :ding:

Fuck linkin park and korn i dont regard them as real metal

I regard bands such as pig destroyer' date=' agoraphobic nosebleed, converge, mistress, charger

and so on and so on as real metal[/quote']

Oh aye. Good een. They don't play that in the shops because it's a fucking god awful racket, liked by a minority and would clear the shop of customers in about 10 seconds flat.

right then, for a start before you started having a go at chris for just talking about one up you mentioned it first and specifically said we don't play any metal. as has already been pointed out we bloomin well do! why just this very day we played an entire thorrs hammer cd and i'll guarantee it's heavier than anything you've heard anywhere else or even you want to hear. it's heavier than mistress(which we have also played in the shop). if you want metal, come see us and stop fucking whining. obviously we can't play it all the time, not everyone likes metal. in fact our boss in particular dislikes metal, rule in life number 1: happy boss means easier day.

as for hmv, well they play metal occasionally as well and i played slipknot there 6 years ago when i worked there, and korn and kittie(i know these don't sound extreme or anything just now, but this was a big thing in those days and about all i could get away with). and they will never play metal very often cause they don't sell much of it. they do sell a helluva lot of busted though. hence you hear busted.

fopp are an indie store, always have been always will be. we do indie too in a big way.

stop complaining, you have no grounds for complaint at all. you just shop on the wrong days and at the wrong times. plus i don't want to listen to metal all day, i like lots of music. i like to listen to many different things in a day to keep it interesting, as does most of our other staff.

hell, we even had a full scale mosh pit in front of our counter for angel of death one thursday night! no word of a lie. t-shirts torn off and everything. marks all over the floor. bloody hilarious watching it on the monitors.

oh and as for swearing in music when it's being played in the shop. it's not big or clever to play really sweary tracks when elderly people are in the shop or people with really young children so most shops will avoid it. no point in offending customers for the sake of offending them.

*sigh* perhaps I should stop being so general. I'll hold my hands up to that one. The way you were wittering on it appeared to the casual observer that all you ever want to hear is metal.

No i wasnt "wittering" as you put it i was trying to make a valid point that metal isnt regarded in the public view. Which is wrong as all music is meant to be heard. Why create barriers within the media\retailer industry?

aye man' date=' but they sell korn and linkin prak in all the music shops you mentioned. how the fuck are they supposed to sell any korn or prak cds if they don't fucking play it man?[/quote']

Thats what the media brainwashing giants mtv and kerrang are for

You are missing the point. Mainstream shops play mainstream music as that's where 99% of their money comes from. Shops generally want to make money. Offending people playing metal will make people not want to shop in them.

You could argue the same point for all minority music from hardcore gansta rap to freeform jazz.

You have lost the point totally. Oh please go away.

Dont you have TV commercials for that shit or dont you get out of your cave much?

The metal bands i like get none of this attention withing the media

maybe they do play metal' date=' and it just so happens that when you are in the shop they are playing something else. i think the music shops may have a conspiracy against you, and in fact when metallica was switched off, it wasnt due to the offensive swearing, but because rune had just entered the shop. just a suggestion mind you.

If you cant take this debate serious just please dont post at all thx

Thats your opinion and ive got mine, lets just leave it at that.......

Why post on a genre you care nothing about?

It neither does nothing for the thread or adds anything constructive

You play metal well ok then, or is it you play the metal you want??

I have requested various cds to be played and yet i was met with the responce of "oh no sorry we cant play this" Is this a contradiction? Why say that?

I regard slipknot as a joke band, a fad. Please dont put them in the metal bracket its rather insulting for any real metal fan.

Dont you think chris can speak for himself? Yet again the "metal all day" comment comes up, I didnt mention this once, as i stated in my previous post.

I will say it again, why create musical boundaries?

It's not about musical boundaries. Some people find metal offensive - fact. Some people find gansta rap offensive - fact. Shops want to make money - fact.

By playing this music over the PA in shops people will leave without buying anything, and most likely not come back. That's not really good business sense now, is it?

Shops stock the stuff you want to buy, so you can listen to it whenever you want. I don't see the problem.

And as for requesting music to be played instore? It's a shop, not a sodding nightclub. There is usually a CD player with a set of headphones in good record shops so you can listen to something you want to buy without the rest of the people in the shop having to endure it.

I don't moan because there is no rap on the PA in record shops. I go in, buy the stuff and go home and listen to it. Just because I like it, I don't expect it to be shoved down other peoples throats. I can appreciate it's not everybody's cup of tea.

look, we are not a jukebox. we play what we want to play. i don't want to listen to hardly anything i sell at work. most of the stuff people buy sucks.

slipknot are a metal band, deal with it and move on. sheesh.

chris can speak for himself yes, but so can i. and i can comment on a discussion about one up involving my brother if i want to.

i didn't mention listening to metal all day as a reference to anything you'd directly said. look at the context i was saying it in, it was referring to the fact that you've been in the shop at the wrong times hence you missed the metal goodness BECAUSE i and others don't want to listen to metal all day SO we play other things as well. my point being you can't expect to walk into a shop and get an instand rune soundtrack.

i really don't see what your argument is anymore. you complained cause shops don't play metal. they do. what's your point? oh yea, hypocrisy cause some mainstream shops don't play 'your kind of metal' but they claim to sell metal. why would you go to hmv or virgin for underground music anyway? so you can be charged 16 for the privelage? or so you can go in and be met by a bemused assistant when you ask for the new electric wizard album? there is no argument here, they don't play it cause they can't and won't. we play it cause we can and will. but only some of the time.

End of the day you will find all kinds of people who will find a range of different genres offensive so i really dont think this is a valid point. As an alternative ive decided to listen to the music online thru bands websites. Which i find now as the only way for me. Then hell if i like it, ill buy it online :)

99% of people do not find Busted offensive. 99% of people find Pig Destroyer offensive. (By offensive, I mean offensive to the ear. Not offensive as in shocking)

Music should have no boundaries. Music is for the masses regardless of genre. Every genre is there to be enjoyed.

Why is there such ignorance in the music community towards something alternative or different? Hell you get shit bands in all genres but people should be given the option to find out for themselves via the media or via shops. It really pisses me off that people cant have an open mind to change.
