Not sure how the video or the artist are 'pretentious', though? Studying art is as pretentious as studying engineering, it's just people doing what they're interested in. Seems futile to moan at people for doing something harmless.

Again, I'm not really referring to the video but the arguments here defending it.

Actually, that's a totally fair response and I respect it. It was kind of childish of me to generalise so much, but I got off on a bit of a rant. I also came across as a bit of a prick, full disclosure.

I still stand by my confusion that the idea of the 'common man or woman' we're presented with by the media generally doesn't include someone who's prone to think about things. Let me put it another way:

Why is Joe Average seen as an ideal type?

You didnt seem like a prick but i just wanted to clear that up. Its a cliche but its the media maaaan, they give us this image of what the average joe is. Though i do think in Britain we like to see the underdog win, So yes we do like average joe to be successful but not forget where he comes from eg Alan Shearer's interview after being world record signing "I'm just a sheet metal workers son from Gosforth" hes no Cristino Ronaldo adn we (I) like that

I completely disagree with the notion that if someone does something purely to provoke a response that it can be considered art. That is utter bobbins, in my view.

Perhaps because people in Britain generally tend to be suspicious of people who deviate from the things that allow them to identify as a 'good, proper bloke'. I'm not sure if it's a class-culture thing or if it's a masculinity thing or what.

Proper bloke approved:

Football

Top Gear

Ready Salted flavoured Rock 'n Roll

American films with gangsters in

Proper art with fields and people and stuff you can hang in the shitter

A bit weird and suspicious:

Books without spys and mysterys in

Films without proper endings and accordian music.

self-expression of any form

bands that haven't got a Best Of out and aren't advertised with Zane Lowe saying 'Featuting the hit single...'

Girls giving birth to Heinz products on gallery floors.

Your broad based categorisation is shit and although I fall into both categories in some way or other I still thought what that lass was doing was utter garbage. Anyone defending her probably just wishes they had been there to discuss Belle and Sebastien bootlegs or something once she had cleaned up her vag.

I agree. It's also patently wrong.

An innoculation, for example, is not art, but it is done purely to provoke a response, in this case to immunise the recipient.

Despite what Irvine Wlesh might have us believe, a ned asking a random passer by if he wants a fight is not art, but it is clearly an act intended to provoke a response.

Fuck, scratching my cat's head to make him purr is an act intended to provoke a response, but it is not art.

Speaking as someone who wrote a dissertation on Situationism and the Art of the Spectacle, I call bullshit. Pretentious bullshit in fact.

See my above posts, I conceded that my catagorisation was weak and based on lazy stereotyping and more of a rant than an argument.

Suck my ass it smells!

Art is subjective and most your arguements come off as nothing more than pretentious tripe.

I think porn is art but that's because I like to jack off round the clock and smear my junk onto car windows and draw what can only be described as ink blotches ... Art attack!!!

To guy who rambled on about the whole masculine bullshit:

Footbal sucks

I like beer

I hate best off's and Zane Lowe.

I like to be an elitist grindcore fan.

I think Kangaroo's are cool as fuck.

I feel hard as nails now and I still that chick is a fucking goon.

Yes, she expressing something, but what is it? I don't have a clue, and so far no one in this thread has said what it is

You seem to be suggesting that if something is challenging it has no value. Perhaps she isn't making one bold statement. Perhaps her art simply reflects the confusion and frustration we all experience each and every day.

if the vast majority of a sample audience don't have a clue what's going on, then what's the point?

The majority of people watch Avatar. If art was left to the majority of people then we'd still be drawing stick figures on cave walls.

Exactly. It's become a meaningless buzzword.

Let's just end this? People aren't satisfied in agreeing to disagree.

No, it means to make "an unwarranted claim to importance or distinction" (Wiktionary), which is exactly what "this piece of performance art will make you think about art in a new way" (paraphrasing the earlier Wiki reference) is.

Also, there was a guy in the audience trying to zoom his camera on her bits, he was funnier.

And perhaps in the way he captured the erotische zeitgeist, the pornification of society if you will, his was the truer art... next Germaine presents a short film about why all Australian men are bastards

I'm not saying that something challenging has no value. I'm just saying what she does in that video is of no value to me personally. I don't expect agreement from you or anyone else here, I'm just not a fan of this art form. I see it as pretty elitist, and that isn't what art is about for me. I'm not trying to invalidate what she is doing, at no point have I said it shouldn't be considered art, just saying that I don't like it and that I feel there are more effective media for expressing feelings and emotions. This is all very subjective, so in no way am I saying I am right, just sharing my opinion.

As for your second point, art isn't "left" for anyone. You make it sound like artists are an elite few who lord it over the rest of us Cavemen. Anyone can be an artist, if I'm pissed off at someone and write a song about it, it could be considered art. Not particularly good art, because I'm a pathetic songwriter, but art nonetheless. There is nothing stopping anyone creating art, the only thing in question is whether the work ends up having influence or cultural significance, and even if it doesn't, it's still art. If someone chooses to create art during their life, then it's up to them, it isn't "left" to them. Monet and Van Gogh would still have painted even if other, less skilled painters did too.
