french_disko
Are Fopp moving to the old Bakers shop on the corner of Belmont St / Union Street ?I read that today on the chat site at www.afc.co.ukCan't confirm it though. Think One Up will be happy about them moving there? And it's across the road from Virgin.

And it's across the road from Virgin.Aye it would be pretty close to HMV and the Cavern as well... But the Bakers shop is def getting gutted just now. Lots of Fopp stuff is 15 squids now anyway and I dont really buy much there anyway. But if they got some vinyl in that would be different !Dave
Guest tv tanned
a far more sensible location than their current location. If One-Up are not happy about it, then it means they feel Fopp has something to offer that they perhaps don't, which should inspire them to compete with each other, which can only be good for the consumers (us)I'm sure all the 'cool' kids will still want to hang out at One-Up and make like they're living in a Hollywood movie... psydoll
I'm going to make a musical about the One Up kids versus the new Fopp kids! It'll be fantastico!Fighting on the street/Dave Officer on the beat/Can anyone stop them now?
lepeep
hay, just think about avalanche, and fopp in edinburgh (right next to each other), both are always hoaching at the weekend...I just bought some 5 quid stuff in fopp today (and ween's "white pepper" for 3 quid !).some people just don't use their eyes when they go shopping...ho hoI think it'll be great, I can shopp in fopp and one up, in the same dinner time ! framheim
we already compete with them. both shops main target markets are students. though we have much more specialist stock than they do and they probalby won't expand on that too much if they move to bakers.at the moment it's just a rumour, they were interested in the site but i don't know if they've gotten it or not. obivously we wouldn't be particularly happy about it but what can you do? get on with things and hope it doesn't affect us too much. also heard a club was interested in it. hope that doesn't happen, there's enough shit clubs and pubs round belmont street already. does anyone else think the council have completely arsed belmont street up? it had the potential to be a fucking brilliant alternative street like a mini-camden or byers road but has been overrun by theme bars and clubs. shame they can't turn buildings into more community art spaces or encourage shops like retro rebels to move there. lepeep
I remember when belmont street felt a bit like edinburgh (a good thing in my book), then the Wodka bar started going "up market", the Siberia shite hit and then there was the Neds nest "priory"...and lo and behold, a slice of windmill brae / justice mill lane (wankers alley) was brought a little closer to the centre of town...a sad day indeed. [i'm nae holding my breath though...]It's an oft-repeated moan of mine that Belmont St. was indeed a more 'alternative' area of Aberdeen with One Up and the excellent pubs of TK's, Wild Boar & Wodka Bar plus Glow/Lava/Kef as a venue but then something went eerily wrong... Guest tv tanned
Indeed, I moan my backside off whenever I get the chance about how Belmont Street has become a sort of mongrel creation. That said, I tend to go to O'Neills of an evening, and I rarely, if ever, see any sort of trouble on Belmont Street.I think the diverse crowd is actually a blessing, rather than a curse. But damn them for fucking up the Wodka Bar (shakes fist)
Guest tv tanned
Dave, out of curiosity, do you ever get the urge to walk up to some of the folk who hang around One-Up (you'll know who they are) and say:"Wake up, this isn't High fucking Fidelity?" ragudave
It would be interesting if Avalanche Records were to take over the place. But they seem to have closed 2 of their 4 Edinburgh branches this year so I doubt it...I agree that Belmont Street and surrounding area has too many pubs/ clubs. Far too clustered. In years gone by all the people who wear dress shirts, little dresses & have orange skin stayed at the West End of Union St. Nae any more !That new Hoagies type club on Gaelic Lane will open some time soon as well. Cloud
Apparently the Wild Boar is heading downhill too, they're cutting drinks prices and entertainment and going towards getting neds through the door..i mean, whyy?!as for Belmont Street itself, last saturday night was testament to the fact that the area is flourishing. LonelyHunter Alister
Definately agree with the comments re Belmont Street. It is still the place I spent most of my cash in the day (CD's) and evening (lager). But I feel the atmosphere has changed for the worse. I am old enough to remember when Belmont Street was out of the way, and very few people went there for a night out. Only Drummonds, Wild Boar, Ma Camerons were open. Now Wild Boar feels like it has to reinvent it's self, with a 'trendy' makeover, and r&b music. Is there not enough bars/clubs with this style/image in Belmont Street. Have their owners never heard of attracting customers by making yourself different from the competition? Or is Belmont Street so full with drunk tossers in expensive clothes, that they pushed the previous customers away, and WildBoar needs to attract them in?Oldham Street in Manchester, is a great example of a Council supporting independent bars and shops, and preventing an area being destroyed by national chains. Certainly agree with Dave's comments re Fopp stock. Difficult to get stuff in there these days, they have stopped carrying the stock they used too. Also find I now have most of the CD back cataloge I want.
Biz
Are You Not Forgetting ?...Drummonds and Kef and The Triple Kirks and Belmont Cinema have bands,The Chip shop does great chips,1 up and The Cavern should be chuffed, they will get more punters through the door if Fopp moves into the area.Belmont street is a great place, the Art Gallery is at the end of it,go there chill out and stop being such negative time wasters,THIS IS NOT A DRESS REHEARSAL . psydoll
nope' date=' i never, what was it like?[/quote']It was a pleasing slightly ramshackle place that was quite dingy in the classic old TK/Wodka Bar way and played a pleasing mix of reggae, hip hop and dubbier stuff most times that I was in.They also used to have bottles of red on offer *sigh*
