Someone has made it inside Amadeus armed with a camera and taken some photos of the old place. As predicted, it is totally fucked. Worth a look for those who had some brilliant times in there back in't day. It's quite sad really.

Flats i would imagine. Probably when the inevitable closure of the beach Cineworld and Chiquitos et al happens.

There's a comment in there that suggests it's going to be some kind of nightclub / venue again.

Hi Laura,

I'm actually one of the guys involved in the rebuild project (branding and marketing). Happy you managed to relive some memories, just in time too as the doors will soon be closed as we move into the next phase of the build

I'm sure when the new venue opens it will become a must-go place like Amadeus was ;-)

It just won't be a must-go place. Who can be hooped going up there when there's plenty centrally?

Is that not one of the reasons it went to the shit?

I don't know for sure, but I remember being in just a month or two before it closed and it was just deserted. It was a Saturday night and there was about 30 people in.

I just assumed that everyone stopped going because places like Priory, Espionage and was it Eskobar? (where Korova now is) opened all around the same time and it dragged all the punters back up to the town.

I think people forget just how popular that place was in it's heyday. It held 2100 punters, and on many occasions I queued for almost an hour to get in. And I'm not talking weekends, I'm talking weeknights. 2000 punters on a Monday night is impressive numbers for any venue, even if it was student night. It's was unbelievable how packed it got in there. It even had it's own buses that ran between the student halls and the club! That was a stroke of genius. We used to get tanked up at Woolmanhill then jump on the "minger express" to Amadeus, and the bus queue was so long you had to sometimes wait for the next bus cos it was full.

Thursday nights were just stupidly popular, 70s night with proper dancers and all sorts. It was absolutely ram-packed every Thursday, folk used to come through from like Fraserburgh and Peterhead especially for 70s night.

It was the biggest nightclub in Scotland at the time, but it just died pretty much all of a sudden. By the end they were just playing Happy Hardcore to a bunch of underagers.

Hmmm, i can't see that getting too far off the ground.

I agree, it's too far out of the way for most people. I can't see all the cornbeef legged skanks marching up the wind-tunnel that is the boulevard in their slit-skimmers just for a couple of Wkds and a couple of fingers.

Former nightclub set for makeover

CLUB: Amadeus nightclub at Aberdeen's beach leisure complex is set for a revamp.

A FORMER Aberdeen nightspot today looked set to be transformed into one of the biggest restaurants in the region.

The 7 million Amadeus nightclub, at Aberdeens Queens Links beach leisure complex, has lain empty for more than six years.

But the vast 25,000sq ft former Amadeus building could now become a huge Chinese buffet restaurant.

Amadeus closed its doors in Aberdeen in 2003 and has been branded an eyesore.

Over the years Amadeus has been pinpointed as a potential spot for various business ventures in Aberdeen including a casino.

X Leisure bought the entire Aberdeen Queens Links site in 2005 and announced plans to turn it into a new gambling haven.

But chief executive of X Leisure, Frenchman PY Gerbeau, the man who transformed the fortunes of Disneyland Paris, said there had not been enough interest in the Aberdeen site from companies.

Today an X Leisure spokeswoman said the new business plan could be finalised within months.

She said: We have leased out the Amadeus building to a company called Balman TT Ltd, which is based in Aberdeen.

The company is to open a Chinese buffet restaurant.

The plans will hopefully be finalised by the end of the year and I think the company ought to be on site by February.

Aberdeens beach site already includes several popular restaurant chains, such as Pizza Hut, TGI Fridays and Frankie And Bennys.

Another Chinese buffet chain, Jimmy Chungs, also has a restaurant at Aberdeen beach.

And Dons director Willie Miller recently opened new fish restaurant Skippers on the Queens Links site.

Priory killed Amadeus.

Amadeus was great, but can't see it competing these days as loads of clubs have opened up centrally. Priory may even have taken away masses of its custom anyway, but it had the genius idea of not charging on the door.

From memory Amadeus was in the cunting expensive bracket, to both get in and for drinks. There did used to be drinks deals for skint students like me, but it was always on shite alcopops - green and blue bottles of VK or some shit??

For it to even compete with what's now in the centre of Aberdeen, it will need to have masses of free buses (which was a complete masterstroke), and be at the worst, cheap to get in, and put on some amazing nights to pull in the punters.

Back in the day, the only things you really had competing were the Palace, Zuu, Eskobar and not much else, De Niro's maybe (though that was right ravey-davey wasn't it?). Now you have Liquid, which is (or was last time I was there) much closer to what Amadeus used to be, Espionage (free entry), Priory (free entry), Warehouse, Korova, Tunnels, Drummonds, Club Tropicana, Exodus (admittedly some were there before, and aren't the same concept as Amadeus, but they all now open till 3am pretty much every night of the week, and are in town).

Amadeus was great, but probably because it was the only thing really like that around, and it was pretty unique - I can't imagine folk being hooped trekking up there for a night out these days. There would need to be more on offer in terms of bars etc along the beach front, and a bit of variation, so punters could go down there and spend there entire evening there, rather than the midnight decision of where to go, which almost always ends up being the closest/shittest place when I'm out with a crowd...

Priory killed Amadeus.

Also killed off the Aberdeen Uni Gallowgate Union. Many's a happy Monday I spent getting slaughtered on 50p vodka's at the union then the bus to Amadeus.

I remember queuing up again and again to sign up for the free membership thing for Amadeus just to get the free glass of 'champagne'. Once the gave me the bottle to stop coming back. Good times.

I seem to remember both places went to shit almost overnight at the same time too.

When i was at uni in Glasgow in 98-99 some of the guys were asking me about Amadeus as they heard it was great and wanted to go, at that point I thought it was shit, mainly due to being at the beach, and horror stories from my mates about the bouncers.

There was a church using it a few years ago, think it was the same folk responsible for the skate park that was beside codonas before they built the mini-golf outside.

I too think that it should really be redone as a rollerdisco.

And it had a sizzlers in it! How could it have gone so wrong?!

o_O How could you lot let a place like this go to waste, so I could never enjoy this? You've let my generation down.

I must say the interior doesn't look like I ever imagined it from looking at the outside as a young nipper. Mind I didn't really know how to imagine what nightclubs looked like then, I thought they'd just look like big versions of Ramboland or Coco's but full of adults.

yeah from the sound of it, it was the bollocks in its day. That photo album is actually really cool cos also never seen inside and its sad to see anywhere go into that sort of condition.

also heard from a bloke at work that on the last night it all kicked off and there was a mass brawl involving bouncers and police. mainly due to the fact the bouncers were pricks if im correct!?

Wirelessly posted (LG-GC900/V10a Obigo/WAP2.0 Profile/MIDP-2.1 Configuration/CLDC-1.1)

Remember the "VIP" area in Amadeus? It was basically just an area with a rope.

Yeah you had to pay an extortionate yearly rate to get access to the VIP lounge. Or you could just go under the rope when the bouncer wasn't looking. I remember saving up my doubloons once for like a year to get the free bottle of champagne, which as it turned out tasted like assholes and nobody would fucking drink it.
