Here's an alternative example of how to have a simplistic website while not being a web designer AND having a design that reflects on the quality of the content featured:

Portfolio for David Officer Photography David Officer Photography

If I can just drop this link as another example

Sam Brill Photography

This has to be one of my favourite websites of a local photographer (design and content).

Awesome photos, but the left to right scrolling sucks ba's.

Also, again the photos take fucking ages to load. Whatever happened to good old fashioned thumbnails? If porn sites were laid out like this, nobody would ever get any wanking done.

No, no, no, why does it scroll left to right? That is just wrong.

I have to agree with that.

Left to right scrolling is very poor. Ideally, fit it to one screen. If that's not possible then some up and down scrolling is ok, but left to right is not good.

I disagree, I quite like the left to right scrolling...makes viewing the images more smoother.

The images took a fraction of a second to load on my computer and I have a fairly standard connection speed. Maybe all the Peter North clips you have stored are causing the problem?

From a web design standards point of view (ie where I as a web/graphic designer come from) it is wrong for so many reasons.

As a user of the internet, it is shite. Web pages scroll up and down. The only way left to right would be acceptable is if it was backed up by good, strong, striking design. That site, not so much.

Nice looking website but the images are a bit samey. Just reminds me of Venture.

The guy's selling a specific service (the same one Venture used to sell) though, so of course they're a bit samey.

With Sam's left to right scrolling. Having something like that is fine in a DHTML/AJAX script where the page itself stays static but the pictures scroll, but having the whole page scroll left to right is not a good idea.

It just seems like the page is disappearing off the edge of the screen (which it is).

That is a fair enough point, I had figured you would be updating your website from your main PC, I know that is what I do.

I have used Joomla for my site, but that is purely because I have been doing a bit of work for people who wanted a CMS driven site made for them so they can update it themselves etc. The best way for me to practice/test new stuff has been to design my own site with Joomla so I can break that instead of a live site that really matters.

I must say I like the look of your site a lot more now that you have tarted it up a bit. I prefer it with the texture, but that is where my head is at design wise just now.

Your RGU Prospectus is a cracking bit of design, but I do have one thing. I like the latter half better than the first. The big, open white space sits better than some of the slightly more cluttered pages towards the front.

Thanks I personally like it with the texture too, Ithink the stronger green gives it more oomph too haha

Yeah I agree, I think the main reason the start got a little more cluttered is because I had so many images, as it the project was based on photography, I tried to cram in a bit more at the start than i should of, to stop it being text heavy, but it's all a learning curve! haha

After googling my website I found this joker yet again posting my website for feedback

http://www.brightpixels.mediadungeon.net/?p=5704

I then found that this is his website, and this is his portfolio

http://www.brightpixels.mediadungeon.net/?page_id=3042

For going to so much effort to slag my website off, it seems pretty funny that his is far from perfect.

Not only that, he is from India, how exactly did he find this site and my website? strange

Congratulations Sherlock! Unfortunately I must say that you are completely wrong: first of all I am not Indian, second of all - why the hell would I post it on my own website? Tsk tsk for wrong assumptions. I bet that whoever twitted on that poor guy's Twitter did REAL damage, completely devastated him by posting opinion on a "Web 2.0" spam tool for real Tools.

Since I got this out of the way, disregarding trolling on how immoral was to post your site for a review I quickly took a look at rest of comments and holy crap your site is indeed poor.

"Its very text heavy and non visual considering what kind of portfolio it is. Its very boring to navigate and I would consider using something visual (thumbnails?) to navigate your sample gallery."

Derp derp derp derp, does it take long to get to the pictures? Yes. Does it make piss poor attempt to look professional? Yes. Does it use horrible background pattern? Yep. And here is a cracker - with amount of pictures on single site, did you even for a second consider preloading or even using thumbnails? No. God damn, I am so wrong, am I not?

Here's the answer: "for something I knocked up in a evening, I wouldn't say it is all that bad". One evening, impressive! Maybe you should put it on the front page as well, would make folk visiting it show how much effort you actually put in work done. It looks like you knocked it up in about 30 minutes. And you have to grow up and get a grip mon ami, if you claim to be a pro, live up to this opinion in all aspects of your work.

@Slutbags McGee: Yeah I actually have got better things to do, care to elaborate more? Maybe in more than one sentence?

Ha ha ha, you're funny! I am not angry, I am merely amused. You are all but small break from my work. Apart from that you bunch are entertaining enough too keep me coming back. Never enough of folk who should never been allowed out of cradle!
