You state that it's a simple design of a site. Obviously you did not even take under consideration any design guidelines or principles. It looks absolutely ugly, and a CMS on top of that as well. Seriously, first time I have seen your site I assumed you used FrontPage or any other WYSIWYG web editor.

Fair enough, let the art speak for itself. How can it speak for itself though if in your poor attempt at ripping off Olly Moss web site you used Icy Mannequin (#DCF2FD) and Grey? Are you for real or what? That puts of just by contrasting two colours barely used on any decent site and with a lot of dead space on the site it just looks atrocious. Oh dear, that is being a douchebag, innit? Then have a bit of douchebag-ey advice: take a look at this site and do research and then take a bash at publishing any sites: Basics of Web Design

To be honest you are not the first and not the last designer that will fail miserably despite having decent or even semi-decent material. Suit yourself.

And as far as you are saying you could knock it up in visual editor is doubtful as it uses jQuery and CMS as a back up so I can update the info like a blog [hence the php]

Believe me, as a Graphic/Web Designer, I could, and have in the past. Yes a CMS has it's place, but I personally don't see your site as one of those places.

signing up to a forum, posting my site with your first post for views and to back your argument up is pretty sad

and i clearly didnt try and rip off Olly Moss

Harsh.

I think some of the criticism is valid but has been presented here in a pretty unrelenting way. The end result is that you end up getting defensive, which is understandable.

As a first pass it's not terrible (I've seen much worse sites over the years and I'm sure I will again), wouldn't take a lot to tighten it up into something better from a web development and a design perspective.

Also there's fuck all wrong with using content management systems for this kind of site, it saves editing code/html all the time which takes longer and it's easy to make a mistake which leaves tags showing or ruins the look of the site. If you're adding images all the time and posting news items or whatever then it's much quicker to login to the CMS and make a quick edit.

Yeah, just to clarify, I wasn't slagging your website, just adding some what I thought was constructive criticism.

I'm no expert at all, and haven't studied many designers' websites, so the totally plain look may be very common, and what other designers/employers look for - i.e. something totally simple to just look at the actual work.

I still think your site would benefit from being jazzed up a little bit - some texture to the background or something like you suggested. I personally don't like the colour scheme on your website, but that could just be me...

Your actual work is all awesome though...

(ps. I honestly think I could knock something up that at least looked like this in a basic web editor, using html, but not down to the detail of the drop down menus, which I think are pretty cool actually. As for managing the website using html, I know that can be time consuming - I've absolutely no idea about CMS or any of that stuff, so don't know if that overcomplicates things or not!)

EDIT: I just clicked on the site again and see you've edited the background. I think that makes the world of difference. I see the homepage is under construction, I'm intrigued as to what it will look like :)

Why doesn't someone offer the guy some assistance, instead of just picking holes in his work.Just a thought!

Good point. I mean signing up to another forum just to post this -

Ladies and Gentlemen' date='

I am here not to show off my own design but humbly asking you to rate following site and it's design:

Levi WJ Bunyan | Graphic Design & Photography | weareaekido.co.uk

So it happents that it was created by a talented young designer who might be misguided in arts of web design and refuses to acknowledge and fix his faults. Please, do not disregard this post, just rate it and let us pass the message of valid reasoning to this young man.

PS. I think he tried to rip off this site (Olly Moss), don't you think?

just seems like sneering, not helping.

Yeah the images loading is a problem which I can't seem to figure out, they are only 500 pxels wide so shouldn't load so slow

also, Levi WJ Bunyan | Graphic Design & Photography | weareaekido.co.uk I have updated it slightly, and currently working on a new front page. it's not much different, but more polishing it up

- Different colour scheme

- New front page

- Background pattern [which appeared in one of my posters]

- Padding on the text to give the 'box' feel

- borders around the images to help them stand out more

And as I said, I do appreciate the feedback, but as Frosty Jack / droid states it felt more like just slagging me off than being helpful or giving worthwhile feedback.

Cheers :)

It always feels like that the first time anyone gives any criticism of something you've worked on and are quite proud of, but a wise man once told me that even if people are slagging you off, the best thing to do is to listen to what they're saying, and really try and work out if there's any merit in it, and try your best not to react negatively to any negative feedback you get (I used to do that all the time, and it will never help the situation!).

This stemmed from a review of one of our gigs where the reviewer said something like "it sounds like they've gone through the "O" section of their CD collection because they sound like Offspring and Oasis", which I thought was utterly ridiculous. How do you sound like Offspring and Oasis at the same time? I spent months slagging this guy off for being a dick and not knowing what he was talking about until the same wise man mentioned in the paragraph above answered my question by saying "Offspring riffs, and Oasis vocals - I can see where he's coming from." and the penny dropped. I don't actually think we really sound much like either band, but the lesson I learned was that anyone offering any sort of review of your work, even if they are saying what you're doing is shit (which I don't think anyone was saying about your website really - well apart from the guy who posted it in a separate forum), should be taken on board. If someone takes the time out of their day/life to listen/look/review your work, any feedback should be appreciated - especially negative feedback which provides suggestions etc. because it can make you better.

I personally really dont like the look of Dave's website at all, and no offence to him, it is cluttered in comparison for a start.

just popping in here to point out my site has been experiencing some fairly drastic problems of late due to being repeatedly hacked by naughty types. layout has suffered a bit due to this but it should be fixed at some point.

not sure what's cluttered about it though. each to their own eh?

Here, I notice you're friends with my mate Jodie on Facebook. (Raven Ember) - have you done some work with her?

Raven Ember and Lucky Rathen.

Sounds like a porn industry partnership made in heaven.

It isn't just images I'd be updating the website with, and it also saves having to opening all my files, my ftp etc, when all i can do is open my admin database, pop in a link to an image, type text etc etc and be done. alot easier in the long run

That is a fair enough point, I had figured you would be updating your website from your main PC, I know that is what I do.

I have used Joomla for my site, but that is purely because I have been doing a bit of work for people who wanted a CMS driven site made for them so they can update it themselves etc. The best way for me to practice/test new stuff has been to design my own site with Joomla so I can break that instead of a live site that really matters.

I must say I like the look of your site a lot more now that you have tarted it up a bit. I prefer it with the texture, but that is where my head is at design wise just now.

Your RGU Prospectus is a cracking bit of design, but I do have one thing. I like the latter half better than the first. The big, open white space sits better than some of the slightly more cluttered pages towards the front.
