It is a sad reflection on the demise of intelligent music journalism to compare an NME from before c.1995/6/7, to any produced in this decade. Even the most hideously 80s self-indulgent Morley-esque PoMo/Situationalism-athon that only tangentially mentions music is preferable to the new writing paradigm that can be summed up as 'You'll really like their trousers'. Buy/Read an old prelapsarian NME, and compare the difference, actual writing by writers.

5 of the Decade

Clor-Clor

Le Tigre-This Island

Joanna Newsom-Ys

Benga-Diary of an Afro Warrior

The Phantom Band-Checkmate Savage

I agree to a certain degree, but from what I have seen of nme recently it's showing slight improvement. It's also notable that few of the uber-fashionable trend bands really make this list.

BUT EVERYBODY STOP POSTING THEIR FAVOURITE ALBUMS OF THE NOUGHTIES, WE NEED A WHOLE NEW THREAD FOR THAT!!!!

There already is/was one http://www.aberdeen-music.com/forums/music-discussion/56766-best-albums-00s.html

These lists never mean anything, just a lazy way to fill a few pages. Is it a fair reflection of the tastes of NME journalists and readers?... probably. In that respect, it's not a bad list. It's like Empire magazine's top 100 films list, Total guff ever year in my opinion but spot on for the average target reader I'm sure.

I'm sure NME journo's don't even listen to music. They probably found some hip scenesters iPod and took the top 50 most listened to albums.

I don't know what your perception of 'hip scenester' is but I don't think most people I'd associate with that phrase (i.e the Vice magazine worshiping creeps of the 'blogosphere') would be caught dead listening to half that stuff. Can you imagine any self-respecting 'edgy' scenester listening to Muse and The Coral?

On the subject of the list itself, it's OK. Predictable and bland would be my two main complaints. Only a small fraction of those albums would make my top 50 though. I read NME fairly regularly, simply because I like music and I enjoy reading music journalism and it's the most frequent print music magazine we have. Some of the writing can be brilliant, a lot of it is utter shit just like most publications. Awful journalism can be as fun to read as good journalism.

Yeah, I was about to say I thought scenesters preferred to be anti-NME, whilst riding their fixed-gear bikes to the nearest vegan restaurant. Unless it's gone full-circle and they like reading it now to be ironic.
