Yeah does anyone else here like old fashioned emo?

Ive got a Rites Of Spring cd and a few other emo songs from that era, and in my opinion they're all a hell of a lot better than a lot of what is classed as emo now.

Anyone got any favourite bands/records that played emo in the 80's?

Now you're talking! I'm quite fond of the stuff from abouyt ten years ago, like Texas is the Reason and Sunny Day Real Estate. I like Rites of Spring, but I feel their album is let down slightly by the production.

Yea i kinda agree bout the rites of spring album it does have shoddy production. But still a classic. Sunny day real estate are an ace band  you heard any heroin?

that way being the same way that slayer are emo i take it...

rites of spring were awesome, the production on that album far from lets them down, it's raw and emotional rather than polished and weak. it really gives it a bit of a razor wire edge to it, when guy screams you can hear the words ripping his throat. yea!! (please note, it's one of my favourite albums of all time and i'll protect it with me claws oot).

texas is the reason were awesome too, brilliant sense of melody. turning 13 remind me of them alot and obviously sunny day real estate.

Yea, i dont know about the rites of spring album, the vocal production is definatly very well suited to the music. I just personaly thought the guitars could have done with a slightly better production.

As for at the drive in, i was mearly unsure whether they were classified as emo or not. I think acrobatic tenament is definatly an emo record but in casino out and relationship of command have lots of other elements in them.

i've never considered them emo in any sense, they've always just been a post-hardcore band to my ears. there's no real emotional connection to make with the lyrics and it's not really based on raw emotion but more of an energy release. i've never heard them described as emo before to be honest. i always looked on it as the same kinda deal as fugazi, a hardcore band that don't really sound like a hardcore band and who push the boundaries of hardcore.

Yea thats why i didnt say definatly in the first place wether they were an emo band. When ive heard people speaking about post-hardcore/emo, they all seem to have differant opinions on what bands are which. The lines are kinda blurred to me.

Doesnt Rites of Springs vocalist sing for fugazi?

yea guy piccioto sings and plays guitar in fugazi. rites of spring also reformed under a different name as happy go licky. they too only did one album though and it was different sounding stuff to rites of spring.

wasn't end on end re-released recently?yeah it's an awesome album, the fact that the production is a bit off gives it character i think, also texas is the reason are awesome-the magic bullet theory, johnny on the spot, back and to the left and dressing cold are my faves.turning 13 remind me of them a little i guess. desaparecidos as well-manana is a fantastic song.SDRE obviously.hmmm would fugazi be classed as emo?i dunno-i hate genres it's all just good music.anyways if they are then margin walker and first demo tape would be among my favourites of theirs

End on End? Said (by Rollins) to be the greatest hardcore release ever. Personally' date=' I think it's way overrated.[/quote']

really? c'mon man it's awesome, total emotional fury with actual singalong melodies that aren't cheesy but that are charged to the top with energy and passion. when i first heard it, it was like someone whacking me on the head with a sledghammer and giving me a hug all at the same time. i love the way they took hardcore and turned it into a serious artistic statement as well as a serious youth statement. i love the way it's fast as fuck but there's still heaps going on all around it, the bass is weaving round the guitar which is crashing round the speakers and occasionally firing off volleys of melody and the vocals are spurring everything onto the end while the drums relentlessly machine gun the song into live and keeps it in check.

but, um, each to their own i guess... :D

It's just a little too bland for my tastes - without excitement. Not big on Fugazi either. Guess we're just gonna have to agree to disagree.

'tis ace, but it really does sound like it was recorded in a garage made out of quality street tins. It's the same with the Dead Kennedys. I prefer "Plastic Surgery Disasters" over "Fresh Fruit..." slightly because it simply sounds a little better.

I know what I'm saying sounds kinda....dumb and really "MTV generation" or something and I'm not a fan of overproduction either, but it's a shame neccesity took away a little from some awesome music.
