Richie
I have an angry musician friend who pointed out to me that Dylan actually made the first rap record. I don't know if that's true but he is very angry so I didn't want to challenge the fact.If he's talking about Subterrenean Homesick Blues then he's completely wrong. Even Dick Van Dyke got in on the "spoken singing" vibe a year before that in Mary Poppins! It's true that Mavis and Sybil 'ave ways that are winningAnd Prudence and Gwendolyn set your 'eart spinningPhoebe's delightful, Maude is disarmingJanice, Felicia, Lydia - charmingCynthia's dashing, Vivian's sweetStephanie's smashing, Priscilla a treatVeronica, Millicent, Agnes, and JaneConvival company, time and againDrocas and Phyllis and Glynis are sortsI'll agree are three jolly good sportsBut cream of the crop, tip of the topIt's Mary Poppins, and there we stop! Guest Tam o' Shantie
I think most people would say that it equates to more than the scientific formula of 'spoken word + music = rap'most rap historians call 'King Tim III' by Fatback the first rap record, but it dunno what the first record that didn't have a backing band was. Le Stu
Nah, she was at some awards event a few years back and she sang but didn't do the rap, and I was gutted but I think the botox and facelifts actually prevent her from forming words at speed. Twats!)See, you're just doing the internets wrong. Whining about rep is just going to encourage the behaviour. Secondly, saying 'rap is crap' or describing it as 'crap music' is the sort of thing my uncle did just before he had his stroke. As I mentioned earlier, this is an irony fail of the older generation in the eyes of the newer.Thirdly, you should change your avatar 'cos it's completely fucking ghey. Just here to help.... Murrr
Apparently, NOT liking rap = negative rep (from 2 people)Why should me not liking Rap music even bother you to that extent..... pathetic !(it was just my opinion, I certainly realise YOU don't have to share it...and there again, I don't have to share yours either...... Twats!)I seriously doubt that anyone on this website really cares if you don't like rap music. It has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that you dislike rap music, and everything to do with the way in-which you expressed yourself. If you went into a thread about The Beatles and called them crap you'd get the exact same response. What was the point, man?
givemeasmile
Just started listening to Biggie's "Ready to Die" again after a two or three absence from my playlist. What a great album!!And rap being limericks?? Jesus.......
Spoonie
I agree, it's a fantastic album. The only thing I don't like about the Biggie stuff is Puff Daddy prattling on in the background and wrecking every fucking tune! Some of his rhymes are outstanding and 'Things done changed' stands as one of my favourite all time tracks.
Le Stu
To chip in, I really like The Roots - Phrenology. Now, I know Roots' hardcore fans aren't fond of that album but it's a good entry point if you're not a massive hiphop head.

TelecasterSam
I seriously doubt that anyone on this website really cares if you don't like rap music. It has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that you dislike rap music, and everything to do with the way in-which you expressed yourself. If you went into a thread about The Beatles and called them crap you'd get the exact same response. What was the point, man?My original post was in reply to a question about the first rap song.....I voiced an opinion about what it was, but expected someone may put me right about it if I was wrong !! ..... I ALSO said ..."but feel free to correct and educate me, coz I don't care much for the genre anyway"....I wasn't trying to goad anyone. The fact I said that I thought that Rap was crap, obviously didn't sit well with a few of you !.... tough ! but there are lots of things I don't like, that other people probably do!I'm not really pissed off about loosing rep POINTS per se, what pisses me off is that the reason for the negative rep to this extent is NOT really justified....Sounds like everyone on here has to toe a certain line, or a certain clique of people on here come down on you like a ton of bricks just for voicing an opinion different from theirs.I thought this was Aberdeen Music Forum...not Big Brother ! (no - not the TV show)I'd better pull my head below the parapet again then....sorry your honours (tugging forelock) it'll be as you say.......sorry I spoke out of turn.... blah blah !?(
Guest Tam o' Shantie
so, we now have 2 seperate 'rap' threads, both of which have disintegrated and turned into flame wars and 'hilarious'/'ironic' observations...can we merge both, close one or close both plz?
Lemonade
To be fair, after the first post in this thread likened rap to limericks, the whole thread was always going to be shit.
