Lemonade
I broke my glasses recently, and I'm going to buy a new pair but I thought I may as well go for an eye test first to make sure I've got the most up to date prescription. I've phoned Black & Lizars to get an eye test and they said hat you are only entitled to a free NHS one every 2 years, and because I had my last one 18 months ago, it would cost me 36 if my prescription hasn't changed.I went to Black and Lizars last time so I'm on their database, my question is then, if I went to another optician, would they know I had had a test at Black & Lizars 18 months ago and try to charge me? Is there like an NHS database or is it just the shop records they are going by?

Shop aboot a bit ken? Also - if you need your glasses for work, your employer might be obliged to contribute to your specs cost.
Lemonade
I thought you were entitled to a free one every year, but I could well be wrong.Nit. Every two years until you are 60.http://www.nhs24.com/content/mediaassets/doc/Guide%20to%20free%20NHS%20Eye%20examinations.pdfI usually take a look at who is offering free tests, go there, get my new prescription, and then go somewhere else if necessary for the actual glasses. I did that last time, I got my eyes tested at B&L, then took the prescription and bought a pair of specs online for a fraction of the price I would have paid in B&L. However they did fall to bits after a few months so this time I might try something a little bit more expensive than the 27 I paid last time. Bigsby
Taking things a step further, about ten years ago when I was still a student I actually bought the frames from a shop in Banchory, then got Specsavers to put the lenses in. The guy in Banchory took a major strop about it, but he was advertising the cost of the frames, didn't say anything about being forced to pay for his extortionate lenses. And Specsavers demanded to see a receipt before they would do it, so seemed to be frowned on in general.
Lemonade
They sell designer frames in TK Maxx with just glass in them, which you can then take to an optician to have lenses put in. One of my exes bought a pair of CK frames for like 15 from TX Maxx in Glasgow. I don't know if she ever got lenses put in them like, we split up shortly after
Lemonade
I got my last pair here.Cheap Prescription Glasses Online - Cheap Glasses Designer Glasses, Reading Glasses ,Sunglasses & Prescription Spectacles - Ispectacle UKThey were cheap as fuck but as previously mentioned, fell to bits pretty quickly. A couple of months ago I was out drinking in the Moorings wearing them, when I woke up in the morning one of the lenses had fallen out and was nowhere to be seen. Presumably it fell out in the Moorings and I was so pissed I wore them all night and didn't notice there was no lens in them.
Jeanette
Just go to a different opticians and say you think you had your last test about 2 years ago! I don't think there's a database because when I moved back to Glasgow, D&A couldn't look up details from when I went to the Aberdeen branch.D&A were pretty good. It means people who don't wear glasses can wear swish fashionable glasses without the world looking like a fish tank.
Lemonade
Well I needed a new prescription so it turned out to be free anyway.Amusing tale - after I got the eye test, peripheral vision test, eye photos etc and got my new prescription, the woman in Black & Lizars took me round the shop trying to find a pair of glasses that I liked. She was just firing glasses at me "try these on, try these on, try these on etc" I found a few that I liked but cheapest pair was like 220 (for just the frames!) so I just said I'll leave it just now and come back at the weekend when I have more time (read - I'm going to Specsavers instead). So I left and went back to work, sat down at my desk and pulled my old glasses out of my breast pocket, where I always keep them. Only instead of my old battered pair, I pulled out a brand new pair of Diesel frames, still with the 130 price tag on them. Seemingly while trying on glasses in the shop I'd absently-mindedly taken them off and pocketed them. You don't get much cheaper than free however due to my angelic and honest character I took them back

At least we all know that the stuff in Black and Lizar's isn't security tagged though.
Soda Jerk
Me and the missis once did something similar in Lidl, but instead of designer frames, it was ice cream. Like fuck we took it back.

Soda Jerk
It was totally an accident, but I can't say I felt a rush of guilt when we realised. Instead, we ate it. It was average, probably.
Lemonade
I don't think I've ever accidentally nicked before. When I was about 9 I shoplifted a troll doll from a gift shop on some school trip I was on. I was chuffed with myself at the time but every time I played with it I felt really guilty, like suddenly the cops were going to swoop in and take me away, and that just spoiled it. Anyway that doesn't count cos I stole that on purpose. My one and only forage into the world shoplifting. I can't remember where it was, or I would send them a fiver and a note with an apology. I've a feeling it might have been Deep Sea World but I'm not sure. On that same trip I also found a soggy porn mag called "Clean Shave" in the toilets of a motorway service station. That got snuck on the bus up someone's jumper and passed around.

fatboy
i got my glasses and frames from specsavers for only 25, why people spend insane amounts on specs is beyond me,i would never buy glasses over 50 tbhi got my eyes tested in march, but i felt the prescription wasnt right, so i contacted them, they gave me the same spiel that if my prescription hasnt changed i would have to pay for an eye test, fair enuf.when the test was over there was a change in prescription so i needed new lenses, so i thought instead of getting new frames again ill just get them put in the ones i bought in march. but no they said it would cost like 56 to do that. i said to them they only cost 25 all in so how can u charge me more?so to 'save' money i went picked up the exact same frames from the display and paid the 25 for the full glassesi hate opticians tbh although ive been going for more than 10 years now i hate when they have to shape them to your face and make you look at yourself in the mirror. i have no time for that.especially when you go to pick up your glasses a week or so later, the whole sitting down waiting for them grrr, just give me my glasses so i can go!
