who do you think has a good / shit tone?

Jeff Beck has a fantabalastic tone, especially on 'jeff becks guitar shop'

Satriani, 'Surfing with the alien.' To me, this album has the shittest guitar tone from a credible player, oh yeah and the drum machine sounds gay.

Bands don't really think about tone anymore, just crank up the gain and thrash!

I hate Satriani's guitar tone, yuk yuk yuk.

I agree with you about Jeff Beck, a superb musician.

I aint a fan of a lot of distortion, I think that people rely on it too much.

Space age guitar in general sounds really bad...

My favourite tone for a guitarist is Chris Cheney from the living end... For distortion he's got a low-gain, trebbley (even a word?) Rock 'n' Roll tone, but even when he's using a clean sound it's still got a little gain, which is pretty cool for ska storkes. Both settings mean that every note is audible and not a single note is lost amongst the distortion, Which is brilliant as he's a top guitarist and even in live recordings you can hear every note... I don't know what pedal he uses but i'm guessing it's something like a BluesBreaker.

Metallica - Orion - What I think to be a "mesa" tone.

Blue Oyster Cult - Last Days of May - Buck Dharma's playing and sound just works somehow.

FNM - Digging the Grave - Bunch of session musicians huh? Nice classic/bit more modern Marshall sound

Posion - CC Deville's Lead sound on the Flesh and Blood album is nice and thick, big boosted marshall sound.

Van Halen - EVH's sound on the first album (The brown sound). When "You Really Got Me" and "Ain't Talkin' Bout Love" kick in, it's just immense - especially the first one.

Kyuss - Demon Cleaner, a slightly fuzzy sound but nice.

Stones - Beast of Burden has a nice single coil tone, and a nice feel to the playing (we all know tone is in the fingers, girls....)

Slays me to say it, but the guitar sound on Stigma's new Ep (especially a song called "You're a sinner now") is pretty immense.

ME - with my JMP and a good pedal....

Vai... and all the cheesy sustain and slurred notes' date=' the tone and sound in general was bad enough[/quote']

Vai's tone is superb, what is cheesy about great sustain? thats right nothing! I wish I my guitar did that :( plus, you cannot, CANNOT criticise his legato ('slurred notes'), what else is he supposed to do? pick everything at 27 notes per second?

Guitarists who deny Vai are like violinists who would deny Vanessa Mae.

I can't listen to van halens first album anymore due to eddies tone. I just think it sucks ass. '1984' on the other hand is much better.

Anyone heard Nuno Bettencourt's tone on extremes 'pornografitti' - thats good distortion!

I hate nu-metal pro tools crunch!

i cvant be arsed going into solo artrists but

shellac and oxes have beautiful tone, i believe its an aluminium guitar or summint

i really rate the tone that a perfect circle seem to get

on a local scale, macrocosmica have the best sound ive heard in drakes, everytime is just spot on!eric euan on moday had it right, 3 levels of volume, all crystal clear

the dude from josephine with the rickenbacker has a nice tone

cleartone sound fucking horrible, tim bench has the worst tones ever (too many effect pedals with pre amps fuck the volumes and width),

dont rate the tom morelli tone (even though he is an ace guitarist who furthers guitar playing), just sounds shite and lame, not fat enough

Totally agree, if you have a nice guitar, a nice amp but a lump of shite in the middle then all you get at the end is the lump of shite.

I hate it when, because of transport problems, i have to use someone else's piece of shit amp at gigs. That pisses me off no end. Especially since I have a certain way of using amps with differnt levels of distortion via the volume knob - a process that I have honed with my guitar, pedals and amp set up but that is difficult to set up with new equipment in a 5 minute noisy soundcheck, with equipment that doesn't sound good that way...

I hate it when people borrow my amp at shows and make it sound shit with shit effects pedals.

One time this guy used it and had a little cry to himself when i had to adjust MY amp which belongs to ME which I kindly lent HIM to use for HIS band to play (how kind of me) and he was a whiney little bitch about how I adjusted MY amp cos his PEDALS were shite and were almost vibrating the speaker out the cabinet. Luckily he went and rented an amp for him to sound shit through.

I am not a fan of pedals.

But you say you play a pink telecaster so it's all good. (not a pisstake i think you have a rad guitar)

GREAT TONE for me....

HENDRIX......early days....got too much into the shite effects later on...

THE BEATLES .... early days.....ricky guitars, vox amps....their sound got worse as they got on

PETE TOWNSHEND...again early early days....for the time...the sounds on My Generation, Anyway Anyhow Anywhere etc must have been unlike anything else.....not a sound to everyones taste, extreme harshness....but is the sound of everything at 10+

TREVER KEITH (face to face) - redefining the punk sound....started out very fizzy but ended up with very slick sounds from the great Top Hat amps....

Billie Joe (circa 39/smooth) - theres an undeniable rawness about this sound that is near impossible to emulate, again may not be to everyones taste, certainly a unique sound.....love the sound on the song "waiting" aswell, think thats the P90's....

RIVAL SCHOOLS.....love the guitar sounds in this....great use of effects...also lots of raw power....check "everything has its point"

meh so much goo guitar sounds...need to work on my own...never buy a jcm2000 .... :moody:

I am such a fussy bastard when it comes to tone. but, there are a few i like

I really like Angus Young's tone. Nice overdriven Marshall. yum!

Tom Delonge has a nice guitar sound. Good use of amplifiers. Mesa and Marshall running together, not the best guitarist... but a really really nice sound.

this one is pretty gay... but i used to like Mark Tremonti's clean tone. next.

Jimmy Page(old and new sound)

Strung Out

Billy Gibbons

Paul.... The guy from the Living End uses two Ibanez Tubescreamers. One with a higher gain level than the other

guitar sounds are subjective and need to be considered in the context of the music (ie the rest of the band) and how they fit in to that sound

what might sound spectacular in isolation might sound shit when the rest of the band start playing

and the opposite is also true

my weediest sounding guitar (Gibson SG Deluxe) plugged into my lo-est fi tranny amp (1970s HH 100Combo) sounds pretty cack on its own, but sounds good with the band cos it lets the other instruments have some room to be heard

Ive got other supposedly better sounding amps and guitars but I usually try to calm things down go down a 'less is more' route when i set them up

my perfect guitar sound is Johnny Thunders through a small medium wave radio

agree that pedals can suck the energy and music from a guitar and replace it with processed shit........I try to never use more than one or two, with proper bypass switches
