that's not really true. kartta had the chance but never took it when i was playing in them.

It wasn't my decision not to do it.

Plus - Kartta proved that they couldn't really "do" acoustic.

I agree....

cheers Andy....

Would like to know the situation and why its finishing?

Le Crunch perhaps?!

They might use that as an excuse, but from what I can see it's just the usual depressing parochial management being unable or unwilling to see the benefit in a show that explores anything new or different. There can't be any financial benefit, it's not like any of the local bands were getting paid for it. I can pretty much guarantee that this show will be replaced by more chart orientated commercial blandness. Some station managers idea of cultural diversity is choosing from either 'playlist A', or 'playlist B'.

It has ever been thus around here to be honest. It has always been a fight to get shows like this on Northsound as well, going right back to the days of Sir Jim Gellatly and before. I'm sure Del can offer an insight into that...

Andy had a great show there, we were lucky to get on it a few times and always had a great time, top top bloke. It's just such a shame it's going even if it's not a huge surprise. Makes the station name sound completely ironic...

The thing that really annoys me is if any of us fantastically talented young things were to 'make it', and return triumphantly to Aberdeen, they'd be the first to sponsor a roadshow at the Beach Links proclaiming them as 'Aberdeen's Own Homegrown Talent'.

Depressing.

i can't speak for whats happening at original as i have no idea but its always a shame when a show like Andrew's goes for whatever reason. in my experience its usually a decision that comes from way above and is usually to do with either audience figures or cost cutting or both.

the broadcasting industry in general is in a bit of a mess right now, very few stations are making a profit as the recession takes hold. if you think local radio is bad in aberdeen you should take a listen to the stations where i live - much much worse!

Cheers for all the kind words.

Original 106 no longer have a requirement to provide specialist music programming and have therefore decided to end the Sunday Showcase. It's very sad.

However the last Sunday Showcase and my last show for Original 106 is tomorrow night and I'd be delighted if you'd listen. At the moment I'll have sessions from the Lorelei, Kashmir Red, Amy Sawers, Kathryn Sawers, The Phantom Band, Panda Eyes and whoever else I can find before 6pm tomorrow.

It's been a pleasure to have this little role in the Aberdeen music scene. Frankly, you're all fucking amazing.

Thanks to everyone who has come on the show over the last fourteen months. Despite having around one or two session every week for the last 67 there were still so many bands I wanted on the show.

Michael Gordon on Northsound is a top bloke and does great work for the scene. Please support him.

Cheers

Andrew

My old employers SHMU FM are still pretty accomodating to the local scene through various shows, commercial radio is dying on its arse. its easy to take the piss out of community radio because often the voices sound quite raw and unprofessional (but most people complain about the professional jocks anyway!) but remember its people who are doing it for free with a real passion for the medium. BBC local radio is not too bad at times. i live within listening range of three such stations and they all cover a wide range of music including local bands but often its very cringeworthy! i don't know why commercial radio is so scared of a one night a week alternative programme, i guess they still think people do want to hear a diet of the latest chart smashes with a sprinkling of oldies! i think tastes have changed and are more varied now.

Would that be anything to do with Rajar? Correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I can see these listening figures are derived from volunteers sending in surveys, detailing their listening habits, along the same lines as TV viewing figures. It strikes me that the kind of people who can be bothered doing that would not be the thrusting young creative 'alternative' types like ourselves, so surely shows like Andy's have no chance of getting representative figures. How much do the bosses go by these figures?

I'll be on the show reprising my role as resident music pundit one last time. I've also been thinking about the future of broadcasting in the city, and I think it may be time to dust off ab-music radio. We gave it a go a few years ago, the audience for it was too small to make it viable then, but if we started up live streams and podcasts on this site again, does anyone think it could be more successful this time round?

Just say the word... :)

it certainly would be rajars, the industry swears by them and uses them for flogging advertising and hiring/firing staff/getting rid of shows. when my show was axed that was the excuse that was used ('according to rajars no-one is listening'), a very easy excuse if you ask me. if anybody actually bothered to ask me what it was i was doing (i had six months worth of session guests booked in advance at the time so that was quite a number of people automatically fucked off!) then maybe the powers that be might have thought twice. however i never fought me corner very well at all something i do regret but all water under the bridge as far as i'm concerned and not really the issue here but an example! but i think i was a victim of a bit of the old cost cutting as a few of my colleagues were either axed or moved around the schedule at the time.

yeah rajars get something like 100 people per 100,000 listerners to write a radio diary and record when and what they listen to and how long for. personally i have never thought it was too accurate but can't really think how the best way to measure audience figures is! for daytime radio i think if its on in workplaces, cabs and shops your not doing too bad! specialist shows are more difficult to judge as it tends to be people pottering around at home i think!

for the small cost of running such a show i dont know why more commercial stations dont run one but i think higher level management have a fear of these kind of shows. if you get in a good jock to do it and get out there its a very cheap PR exercise for the station. i used to love the buzz of getting people up to northsound and doing some acoustic stuff, it really made a lot of people's day and they would talk about the radio station in a good light. at least the bbc try, friday nights with jim gellaty and then vic galloway on radio scotland are excellent but they have to cover the whole country! thats my 2p on the matter anyways!

I just heard the last show (and news of it being that) on Sunday. Came as a bit of a shock as the Showcase attracted a LOT of bands, of both the local and touring varieties. It was also good to get a shot at playing to such a big broadcast area, with a totally professional DJ and support team.

This show will be missed and thanks for the opportunity!

Good luck to Andy and the pundits too.
