Aboyne (river bend of the White Coo) is where the ancestral beat is, Linn O' Dee freaked me right out as a kid. Deeside in general, don't like Formartine much except for the beaches. Banff is nice, Kinneff beach party bay, Old Slains near Colliestoun (sic?), was at a great acid party there. Mastrick.

A few coastal areas:

The cliffs north of Cove Bay

Girdle Ness of course

The stretch of sand from Blackdog to Donmouth

The mouth of the Ythan at Newburgh

Rattray Head

And some inland:

Almost anywhere along the Dee but especially at Inchgarth in Cults, at Dinnet by the oakwood and in Ballater.

Durris Forest

Mar Lodge

Loads of other places too.

seems like i should be spending a lot of time on the moray coast.

I spent 17 years there and never grew tired of it.

I'd love to retire in Ullapool (lovely place), so that I can go to ICT games, visit family/friends in Elgin and enjoy regular trips further up the West Coast and Islands.

cool, good shouts folks. i'm trying to compile a list of places to take photo's of that kind of sum up the north east. a few on there on my list and loads that i didn't have.

Dave, can you confirm you're attempting to compile a document of the geography of the north-east, rather than the region as a lived space? If it's the latter, I think it would be wrong to focus on the landscape of the region, rather than the people that inhabit the towns and villages. You would be better focusing on sites of communal behaviour, like the Turra show (as somebody mentioned), Peterhead port or Pittodrie.

But if it's the former, I'll throw my favourite vistas into the hat: Queens View, looking on to Lochnagar; the view of Aberdeen from Brimmond Hill; the view of the Loch of Skene from Skene Primary School.

I spent a childhood holiday in Ullapool shivering in a run-down rented cottage. I remember playing Hungry Hungry Hippos with my sisters.

i just want to get a good catalogue of north-east landscapes together. the only pictures i seem to sell any prints of are landscapes so figure i should invest some more time on it, plus i like being outdoors and particularly being outdoors in the north east.

it's a good point you make though. maybe that will be next years project :)

Dave, should get yourself signed up with a picture library, you never know where your images will end up. There is quite a decent market for postcards and calendars.

aye, i'm signed up with alamy but don't have much on there just now hence my urge to build up my catalogue. flickr's been a big help in seeing what people search for and click through to as their stats page is really quite powerful.

also had some contact with a couple of specialist libraries as well who are a bit pickier about their photos which also contributed to taking a look at my catalogue and realising i need to put more work into it. you only get out what you put in with stock apparently! :)
