Rusty Deathnail
Hey gang, I want to change the pick ups in my Epiphone Studio Dot as they are just too muddy for me (Alnico Humbucks). Any recommends? I'm quite the noob when it comes to pick ups so advice is welcome. I want something brighter and cleaner in the mids. I've read that some pick ups can be a bit hot for hollow bodies. So far the best names/possiblities which have come up are 90's, Mean 90's, and Pearly Gates. Maybe a silly question but how would single coils fit with a hollow body? An avenue worth investigating or leave well alone?
Bigsby
You can get P90 style pickups in a humbucker size mount, so that would probably be a good choice.
Sam 45
I'm a fan of the P90.
Soda Jerk
Humbucker sized P90's are a good bet, or some low output humbuckers. Hot humbuckers can draw alot of howling feedback from the tone resonating through the hollow body. P90's are a nice middle ground between HB's and SC's. Sharp cleans but thick driven tones. I swear by them.
Bigsby
This may be a bit more than you are looking to pay, but I heartily recommend the TV Jones Magnatron.TV Jones PickupsI have one in the bridge of my Gretsch and it's hands down my favourite pickup (and I own a few high end Fenders/Gibsons etc, including one with P90s). Soda Jerk
Bareknuckle make great pickups. I've not tried their P90's though, but I'm sure they must be as good as everything else they make.
Bigsby
How about Seymour Duncan P-Rails, with a bit of push-pull jiggery pokery you can get P90, humbucker AND strat tones from the one pickup:Progressive - P-Rails SHPR-1 - Seymour Duncan/BasslinesAlternatively they make a humbucker sized P90.Progressive - Phat Cat SPH90-1 - Seymour Duncan/BasslinesI haven't actually played either, but my experience with Seymour Duncan pickups has been excellent in the past. Rusty Deathnail
Aye, I had considered the Phat Cat. Just want to hear some samples now and decide on a combo.
