A fun fact about chocolate milk - I remember reading a study stating it was better at rehydrating after sport than isotonic sports drinks. I wouldn't use it as a source of protein but if you want something to boost your energy pre/post workout you could do worse!

Pretty sure the study was about chocolate milk compared to protein shakes as opposed to isotonics. It comes up a lot in health and running mags/websites. After a workout you want protein and carbs - milk and sugar.

If you want something instead of a sports drink, which is all about replacing electrolytes, then diluting juice with some added salt will do the same job.

Again if you want to be properly sure go read the actual papers in question but here is an article backing chocolate milk vs isotonic drinks. http://life.dailyburn.com/diet-and-nutrition/isotonic-sports-drinks-or-milk-which-is-better-for-athletes/ and this one about skimmed milk actually cites the article in question which is a rare thing in the world of online journalism. http://www.nutraingredients.com/Research/Skimmed-milk-better-than-isotonics-for-post-sport-rehydration

I don't know why anyone would think a protein shake is a suitable fluid replacement drink. Doesn't need a scientific study to conclude it won't be better than an isotonic drink.

Guess it depends what you're trying to achieve. If someone is drinking a protein shake after a workout to rehydrate then they're an idiot. If they're drinking it because they're trying to build muscle mass then that's a different story. Whenever I've seen chocolate milk mentioned for exercise it's always been compared to protein shakes. E.g.

http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/triathlete/triathlon-nutrition/qa-should-i-refuel-with-a-protein-drink-after-exercise/8377.html (last paragraph)

It would never occur to me to use milk for rehydration after a long run though. Just another reason to stock up on Frij I guess!

I thought fish was meat...

Hmm, really? Fish is fish.

Fair enough, the reason I suggested it was mainly because you cited 'taste and consistency' as the reason why you dislike meat, and fish has neither the same taste or consistency as, say, beef. Not even close.

If it was a vegetarian 'animal cruelty'-type issue then I wouldn't have bothered.
