Alkaline
When I walked through town on Wednesday I spotted Frankensteins had closed and the 24 hour shop on Rose Street was shut! Times must be bad.Frankensteins has been taken over and is undergoing a refurb at the moment.
neepheid
Frankensteins has been taken over and is undergoing a refurb at the moment.Well, I hope they refurb the prices too. I always thought it was a tad expensive in there considering it's just a boozer.
Alkaline
Well, I hope they refurb the prices too. I always thought it was a tad expensive in there considering it's just a boozer. It's not going to be a theme pub any more as far as i know and it's not the same company that own it anymore so i'd imagine the prices would change in some manner. Lemonade
It's closed already. I walked past at half past one and the doors were locked. A sad day. It's not really that sad is it, it's just a shop, and it's only been there for like year and a half.
Jeanette
I wonder what will take it's place... It was a big shop!
pogofish
It's been there since around 1994.Much longer than that - Right back to the 1970s & maybe even before. There was a day when even Boots ran a small but surprisingly good music department on that site.Every time I climbed the stairs in Zavvi & Virgin before it, I remember back to the day in the early 80s, when I went there on one of my first days out of hospital after a very serious illness, bought two albums & went to leave the shop. On reaching the top of the stairs, I began to stagger from the effort & swayed into a large display at the top, sending the whole thing crashing all over the place amidst crowds of shoppers (think it was just before or after Christmas) diving to get out of the way.I must have still looked pretty ill, the staff were so nice & got me a chair & saw I was OK whilst others were sent to pick-up al the bottles/tubs of whatever! o_O Oh, later-on, when I was better, I also remember a girl called Julie who I used to meet there quite often who I had a bit of a thing for. Ahhh! Yeah, Zavvi might have been a bit shite but passing it tonight, all dark & shut-up was a bit sad - another of my personal musical landmarks in this city gone, probably for the last time? framheim
It's been there since around 1994. And it's sad because the number of specialist music shops in Aberdeen has declined dramatically in the last year. With HMV concentrating on games and DVDs, Fopp closing and now Zavvi/Virgin going the same way, that really only leaves us with One Up.i honestly never thought one up would win. i mean obviously it's good but...really? one up won? it's crazy! pogofish
Seems to me that One-Up has never made the mistake of having quite the same overheads & prime sites. Much like Fopp before it overstretched itself with expansion maybe?
Lemonade
Why doesn't One Up have a website with mail ordering and stuff?
Johnny Mac
They've had a few attempts at getting one done but it's never really gotten off the ground.I was going to do it at one point.I don't know what the current status is though. Cloud
Yeah, Zavvi might have been a bit shite but passing it tonight, all dark & shut-up was a bit sad - another of my personal musical landmarks in this city gone, probably for the last time? I know exactly what you mean. I was passing it on Thursday, and looking at the 'now closed' signs was really sad. I must've spent so much money on stuff in there and in the small games shop over the years, and to see it now shut is sad.
Alan Cynic
Like Pogofish I was more sad when Boots moved out......wish I'd bought more of their stuff, as the old vinyl selection was good...e.g. I bought this album there in a sale for about 1 pound....popsike.com - Linda Hoyle - Pieces of Me (Vertigo Swirl) 1971 - auction detailsI used to like the air tube system in which cylinders of money whizzed about...there was still a version of it when it was a Virgin store (in the jazz bitty). But the stock wasn't wide enough for me, so I've rarely shopped there in the last few years. It all helps One-Up survive so I'm not worried about the place closing, although I'm sad for all the staff who are now jobless. pogofish
Looks like JJB are finally going down the plughole.Struggling sports retailer JJB has applied to place two of its subsidiaries into administration after failing to find buyers for them. Footwear stores Original Shoe Company (OSC) and Qube have suffered from poor sales and have been trading at a loss. The two chains' 77 stores will continue to trade as normal. Together, they employ over 800 people. Earlier on Tuesday, JJB said it had received a number of indications of interest for its fitness club division. "The directors of each of OSC and Qube have decided to file notice of intention to appoint Messrs Fleming, Costley-Wood and Nimmo of KPMG as administrators of OSC and Qube respectively," JJB said in a statement. OSC, which operates 64 stores, and Qube, which operates 13, employ 270 full-time and 530 part-time employees.BBC NEWS | Business | JJB firms set for administration
framheim
Seems to me that One-Up has never made the mistake of having quite the same overheads & prime sites. Much like Fopp before it overstretched itself with expansion maybe?i don't think that's through actual plan or design though. more just one up can't be arsed with the effort of expansion.like the website there has always been mumblings but nothing ever happens. even an ebay shop would boost their profits. glad they're winning though. Alan Cynic
One-Up gradually expanded/moved over the years until they got to a pretty good position.
