The Subtle Arts
Head and Cab are the way to go.I am selling an Ampeg, what an AMPEG! Yes an Ampeg! For 850 notes! It's a 6x10 cab which is as compact as they come with a B-5r head which is as small as the Ampeg heads come and in a rack mounted case! Kieran_imray
I recommend Gallien-Krueger, you should be able to get a 700RB-II head and a 4x10 RBH cab for a grand. You might even be able to get a hold of the more powerful 1001RB in that budget if you want some more headroom.
Monk Rocker
Having played through Estrella's bassists Gallien Kruger, I'd highly recommend them. EBS make stonking gear - my old bass teacher has EBS and it is built to last.
