South by SouthWest 2009 application deadline moves closer

Bands from across the world are currently applying for the 2009 South by South West (SXSW) music, film and new media festival, considered to be the biggest music industry networking and showcasing event in the world. The deadline for international applications is 24 October 2008.

The Scottish Arts Council will again be coordinating the Scottish presence, staging our own showcase and providing financial assistance to applicants who are officially invited to attend next years event, in March.

SXSW, which has been running for 23 years highlights over 1,800 showcasing acts of all musical genres from around the world on over eighty stages in downtown Austin.

Ian Smith, Head of Music at the Scottish Arts Council, said: We are delighted to announce our continued support for Scottish bands performing at the South by South West festival. Not only does a Scottish presence at this event have an impact on the career paths of the artists involved but in the year that Glasgow was awarded the prestigious City of Music status by UNESCO it also helps to re-affirm Scotland as a country whose artists, managers, record labels and promoters can comfortably perform at the highest international level.

The Scottish Arts Councils continued support for bands attending the event follows on from the success of the eight Scottish bands showcasing at the festival in 2008.

Stuart Thomas, Music Officer at the Scottish Arts Council adds: Whilst it is an amazing event it is absolutely massive and highly competitive. Bands need to be realistic as they will be competing for the attention of absolutely key players in the commercial music industry. You need to be very good, you need to be serious and you need to be organised. The significant opportunities arising from showcasing at SXSW will only be fully realised by artists who are ready and commercially able to exploit such an international market and only such artists should seriously consider applying to SXSW for 2009.
