The Music Club ? ?

Recommended Posts

Walked down Langstane Place tonight and spotted "The Music Club".

Its next door to the back door of Bruce Millers.

Anyone know what its about?

Had signs in the doorway saying somthing along the lines "all welcome" "bar open" , "food available", "live music", "tuition" "jam sessions" and other stuff.

Also had a sign advertising for a promotion and events manager, bar

manager, bar staff etc too.

Checked its website but didnt help explain what the place is about at all.

Is it a bar? is it a cafe? is it a venue? is it a music school?....all of these and more??!

There's already a thread about this, hopefully someone can dig it up otherwise I'll try and find it for you later on.

It's all been a bit vague when it comes to this place (the website was, and presumably still is just a massive infoless tease). Did it look like it was near to opening? From the above thread it sounds like an interesting place, but that was over a year ago...

Thanks for shedding some light on this folks.

Im still a bit confused as to what to expect.

There pr/markenting has been pretty bad by the looks of things.

I'd like to go in for a look (as Im a nosey mofo) but still dont know if I'll walk onto an afterschool club, a jam session, a coproprate event, a guitar lession...or just get a pint an watch a band???

They have been strangely quiet/anonymous. I emailed their web site a long time ago to try and find out what they were doing, whether they needed promters etc and heard nothing back. Does anybody from there post here? You'd think they be trying to contact everyone who would be interested.

You would think if they were getting into the music scene of Aberdeen, they'd at least know about Aberdeen-Music?

Not necessarily. We don't really have that high a profile amongst the general public.

I did a quick pop quiz on a local football messageboard and very few of the people had heard of the site, only a couple of folk who were very active in the local scene (i.e. offramp) knew of it's existence.

Despite our high google rankings. But I think it's a symptom of a greater problem, in that the general public in Aberdeen don't know about anything that goes on here except the biggest gigs.

Do you think there is a way to change that?

I did have a think a while back but all my mates who arent really into music that much all agree this is a great forum. along with Aberdeen-Mad is probably the best local one.

I also feel sometimes feel they can't post on here because if you do all you get back is sarcastic comments from certain ppl. Which puts people off even coming on here. But i guess that is forums all over..

Hmmm...I suppose so. However, a wee bit of research into the local music scene, especially if setting up a music based business surely would come up with Aberdeen-Music? It just seems really weird that they wouldn't think of advertising something like that on here.

Funnily enough it was Aberdeen-Mad I did the quick poll on.

I dunno. Short of going to the trouble of printing out flyers etc and launching a full ad campaign (which I don't know if any of us have the time to orchestrate) I'm not sure there's much we can do. It's something that crops up in conversation time and time again though.

The issue with people being scared to post is a tricky one. Perhaps a newbie forum with zero tolerance should be introduced so people can introduce themselves and ask stupid questions that have been asked a million times before can get their feet wet without being blasted by people who should know better. Seen that work well on other, much more vitriolic (surprisingly this forum is one of the better policed ones on the internet) sites.

You'd be surprised.

Just look at programs like Dragons Den or Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares, there's ample proof on there that people don't think they need to do their homework before starting a business.

Not that I'm saying this place hasn't, perhaps the users of this site aren't their target market. Though if we're not I've no idea who would be.

I know people in bands who rarely use this also.

I think its a great way to get things across. I must admit there is alot of shite as well - which i am gulity of also - but i think there seems to be a wide spread knowledge on here for tips etc.

Its just getting more ppl involved as you say. Maybe like a resident big poster in the tunnels, Drummonds etc etc?

Hey guys

Sorry for the lack of info on The Music Club opening!! Website is being developed and should be ready in the next couple of weeks.

It's been a pretty crazy year building the venue which has been very hands on for us - working from 8am til midnight literally every day.....

We are finally on the networking / marketing trail and would love to see you guys drop by and see us.

Anyone interested doing a gig or promoting events give me a shout.

Well done here at aberdeen-music and we appreciate your patience and interest of course!

gordon@themusicclub.co.uk

Thanks

Petition anyone?

I've been thinking about this. Compared to other cities I've visited or lived in I think the press here is quite bad for for local music & art.

So I was wondering if it would be worth while to start a petition (I hate bloody petitions but they get the attention from press, council & public) to offer the papers, radio & tv and local council(s) to say there should be more & better coverage on local arts (and this could include ab-music)?

The papers probably have some sort of quota to get with regards to bringing 'local news & events', so we could maybe claim some of that? Anyone here work for the P&J or something who can investigate this maybe?

Sorry if I'm sounding like an old fart here and that my idea isn't more of a gung-ho type thing but I think the arts scene and individual artists, bands, musicians etc (as well as visiting artists) deserve better ?

Any thoughts?

I think Aberdeen Journals are never going to do any more than they do now. It would require a wholesale change at the top for them to do so as a few of their journalists have tried to include better coverage of local music over the years but it just doesn't happen.

Local radio is doing ok at the moment though with Original and Shmu FM, does Northsound still include local acts on Sunday nights as well?

Plenty of their journalists have tried to incorporate features/articles/news about local artists, but the newspapers Aberdeen Journals sell aren't interested in advertising local music as their target market has no interest in it.

A newbie forum would be a good idea. Like a lot of folk, I new people who read the site but rarely post (or never) for fear of being ripped to pieces for no reason.

So anyone been in the Music Club yet? Sounds intriguing.

In my opinion, aberdeen-music definitely needs a presence in the real world. Just a few posters/flyers dotted around the place in shops and venues would be a good start. I'm willing to bet most people in Aberdeen simply don't know this site (and indeed a local music scene) even exists, and this could be their gateway to discovering when and where local bands are playing.

Of course, it's easy for me to say that whilst sitting on my arse in Edinburgh. Still, a bit of pontification never did anyone any harm, right?

I think the new logo would work well on t-shirts...

I was tempted to go last night, but settled down to read a book instead. Might just make the effort at some point tomorrow, if I can shake off my natural lethargy.
