The things I use most:

Guitars- Mexican Fender Stratocaster, S&P Cedar Folk (small bodied acoustic guitar).

Stomp Boxes- EHX Holy Grail, T Rex Mudhoney, DD-6, Behringer tuner pedal, Boss OD-3 (which is really boring, but probably my favourite).

Amp - Vox AD50VT (which has done me well, although will hopefully find itself replaced by all-tube goodness before the year/month is out).

Again, numerous other stuff: Westfield Jazz Bass, cheap Yamaha acoustic, Aria Pro II electric... my flat's too small though, so they all live with numerous other individuals.

Oh, I have an ELC tambourine beside my bed too.

Bass

Fender USA Jazz Bass > Ampeg SVT Classic > Ampeg SVT 8X10

Pedals = Boss Bass EQ, Boss Tuner, TC Electronics Vintage Overdrive, Tech 21 Sansamp TriAmp driver

Guitar

Fender USA telecaster/Fender Jap Strat/Takemine EG10 > Peavey Classic 50 combo/Carlsboro Top 50 > Matamp 2 x 12

Pedals = Boss Tuner, Line6 DL4, DoD Graphic Eq, TC Electronics Vintage Overdrive, TC Electronics Dual Distortion

I seriously cant wait to bust out thick jam with the recently serviced/revavled top 50. Dennis Marshall said it sounds absolutely tremendous! :D

Well the reason mesa's etc sound so much better is due to the quality of wood etc to build the cab. The resonance of woods differ, and therefore alter tone significantly. I think marshall cabs are made of plywood whereas mesas are a more expensive and dense wood - and therefore fucking heavy. You'd probably be better trying to stick a V30 in a cheaper cab than make your own from scratch to be honest... but I'm not a total expert on the subject.

yeah just been spending the last hour at work (not working) and reading about speaker cabinet construction. Think I've got my head round most of the calcs, although they're all freely available online anyway. I may just start a little project.

But yes I take your point that it is not just the driver that makes the cabinet good, but everything from construction materials to dimensions.

some interesting info here though for anyone who is interested.

...and that photo is awesome! :-)

no offence, but I hate musicians like you.

Ha ha, fair enough, it's not through choice though, it's through lack of cash, and flogging all my equipment a few years ago cos I needed to pay rent! I like to keep it simple anyway, I don't really use pedals (just a fuzzbox and very occasionally a phaser) and I like my guitar to just sound ugly and noisy, so shit equipment works well for me.

Main guitars...

Shapelywood travel guitar or Fender Jazzmaster for live stuff

Shapelywood travel classical or Danelectro for recording

(also old Conrad violin bass)

Other instruments used... phono fiddle, ukelin, occasional sax, un-named air-organ (all played very badly)

Most used pedals.... Jam Man looper, Marshall echo head, Marshall reflector reverb

I tend to D/I live, so rarely use amps...when I do it's couple of naff Fenders or a little Vox (might also now use Pignose).

4 nights in instead of out could easily sort you out with an amp. failign that, get a credit agreement in place and pay it off per month. Nothing worse than having to ask to use other peoples gear (who bothered to save/work/steal money to pay for it), not to mention getting the sound that you want straight away.

I hardly ever go out, because I'm broke. I'm broke because I'm already paying off waaaay to many other things every month. A few years ago I ran up some stupid debts and the bank have had me by the balls ever since, so I have virtually no disposable income. Hence, beg, borrow, steal.

Lots of horribly badly played basses:

My own custom build

Epiphone EB-3

Fecker Imprecision (yes, a Squier P with "amusing" headstock logo)

OLP MM3

Squier Bronco

Takamine acoustic bass

Basses in the process of being built:

Zebrano Wideboy 5 (6 string neck modified for 5 strings, zebrano body, EMG pups and EQ, Badass V)

Upright "doodle bass" (sweetie tin body, plastic strings, piezo transducers)

Amps

Ibanez 4W "very late at night" practice amp

Laney 30W practice amp

Hartke 3500 (no cabs yet!)

Effects

Zoom 607

And a Tascam MP-BT1 trainer, which is an excellent piece of kit.

I build more than I play, which is quite shameful really.

guitar: fender us standard telecaster

amp: fender performer thingy

pedals: holy grail reverb but it's broken. ltd edition mogwai big muff.

that's all i like to use live though i'd quite like a wee delay and an acoustic. i'm moving towards using my own amp gain and reverb channels these days anyway so don't need much pedals.
