A top 10 drummers thread for discussion

Recommended Posts

Stolen from a Smashing Pumpkins board (thus the focus on Jimmy Chamberlin)

1 John Bonham

2 Keith Moon

3 Danny Carey

4 Neil Peart

5 Jimmy Chamberlin

6 Buddy Rich

7 Rick Allen

8 Carl Palmer

9 Gene Krupa

10 Phil Collins

As The Smashing Pumpkins drummer, Jimmy Chamberlin has had to deal with the walking ego that is Billy Corgan for 20 years. But he has also had to compete with him musically, bringing his jazz background into the Pumpkins heavy, melancholic sound. He is renowned for his lightning quick hands as well as his incorporation of different styles into the rock arena. A true legend of the sticks.

Thoughts on the list? I don't recognise all the names on it...

I'm not a big drummer appreciator (although they're lovely guys!!!!!), but I like....

Terry Cox (Pentangle etc)

Laura (Shop Assistants)

Ringo Starr (simple but effective)

Mo Tucker (Velvet U'ground)

Morris Pert

or even Steve Took (Tyrannosaurus Rex)

I like 'em basic or 'percussivy' , and not doing solos for an hour and a half.

Least fave drum things....'Toad' by Cream.

'Moby Dick' by Zeppelin

anything by Gene Krupa (sp?) or Buddy Rich!

For some reason Robert Wyatt escapes all criticism from me....I love him :)

Guest Tam o' Shantie

this is a rubbish thread, every drummer here is a rock drummer, and people will only put the drummers in their favourite bands...awful.

ps keith moon over john bonham, more interesting guy and pioneered the style that bonham was just carrying along nicely

Id stick Vinnie Caliutta and Liberty DeVitto in there, and how did Rick Allen get on the list?

Rick probably got on the list for being a great drummer, eventhough according to some knobs he's not great cause A. he lost his arm B. Plays in def leppard.

Look up his videos on youtube and you'll notice the guy can play twice as good on drums then most of the drums out there.

I'd agree with 'Solid but fluid'

I quite like Budgie's drumming (although I'm not a big fan of most of the bands he's worked with)...esp on the Slits version of 'Heard it through the grapevine'.

Of course... Budgie!!!!!!!! Now he would be up there as a fave drummer (mainly the Banshees stuff) if I wasn't getting forgetful in my advancing years...

A great deal of stuff in the Tom Waits collection is fab... Various drummers...

I saw him when he had 2 arms...he was OK I suppose. Maybe all drummers should have an arm removed to keep them from overdoing it?????

Or play with an arm strapped to their side?

Or arms only?

Could maybe just take away most of their drums... A little less drastic.

Playing a three piece is great...

Seen him live twice, and yes he's a good drummer. I just didn't think he was great.8-)

Most of those drummers are quite poor in my book.

What about the guy from Primus - Brain?

Many of Zappas drummers had great unconventional fills and grooves.

"quite poor"..?!

Phil Collins always generates a bit of controversy, but the rest are a veritable who's who of the world's most decorated drummers. Might not be your cup of tea, but their ability is absolutely unquestionable.

And Brain wasn't a patch on the original and best Primus drummer, Tim 'Herb' Alexander.
