offramp
interesting music promotions presentDE ROSA + THE FRENCH QUARTER + THE SCOTTISH ENLIGHTENMENTFriday 13th June 2008The Tunnels, Carnegies Brae, Aberdeen AB10 1BF. Phone 01224 211121Doors 7.30pm Entry 6http://www.thetunnels.co.ukhttp://www.myspace.com/interestingmusicDE ROSAAfter their inception at Glasgows School of Art in the early 2000s, De Rosa signed to Lanarkshire label Gargleblast (run by Shaun Tallamy and Andy Miller - producer of Mogwai, Sons And Daughters, Arab Strap, Life Without Buildings, My Latest Novel, Scout Niblett and The Delgados amongst others) and it was following the release of their debut single (Camera / All Saints Day) in July 04 that heads first started to turn. Encouraged by the support of John Peel, Steve Lamacq and the like, De Rosa locked themselves away in Chem19 Studios for the best part of 2005, leading to Chemikal Underground releasing their album Mend - an astonishingly assured debut that flits effortlessly between thundering feedback, abstract rhythmic phrasings and the straightforward approach of traditional folk, all shot through with a lyrical narrative that is honest and inventive - and indeed, the influence of rangy punk and post-punk aggression (Sonic Youth, Stooges, Shellac, Television) infused with a twisted sense of melody and straightforward pop structure (Pixies, Talking Heads, Go-Betweens, Red House Painters) is readily apparent in De Rosa.Mend was voted 16th in Mojo's top 50 albums of 2006 and De Rosa embarked on support tours with Mogwai and Arab Strap. They are currently recording their second album, with guest musicians including Barry Burns (Mogwai) and Robert Johnston (Life Without Buildings).Art-schooled but traditional, splenetic yet tranquil, was there a fresher new arrival than De Rosa? The Glasgow quartet melded noise spasms and acoustic instrumentation around melodious narratives. While the specifics were profoundly Scottish, the emotion touched all. [Mojo]Their debut album is an absolute treat; an atmospheric effort mixing itchy twitchy off-kilter vocals, ragged riffs and dark melodies twist, turn and build into thrillingly blustery crescendos. Mend is intensely compelling and will break your heart over and over again." [The List]"All too rarely you stumble across a band that stands head and shoulders above the crap and leaves you gasping for breath, De Rosa are one of those bands."
