Just saw Avatar in 3D. Holy shit, if you want a ridiculous visual feast, see this movie. The plot is absolute nonsense and the dialogue is abysmal, but if you just want to sit down for 3 hours and lose yourself in a crazy alien world, this is for you.
Was meant to be watching that right now in the IMAX in London. Alas, British Airways strikes means I needed to change flights and miss out. Cunt.

The Descent 2 - 5/10.

MASSIVE plotholes and some particularly stupid police.

Not to mention a telegraphed ending.

I am looking forward to this..liked the first one.....massive potholes scary! ;)

Watched CARRIERS last night - Fatal highly contagious virus infects the world and the film follows a group of survivors and their journey encountering other survivors and possible chance of getting infected....I quite liked it, along the same lines as 28 days but less jumpy and less rage, I like seeing films where things like this could happen . There was a few questionable decisions made in the film tho, overall 7.5/10 Not necessarily a cinema movie.

New Moon

Attended under duress as a birthday treat for the missus. The first Twilight film was pretty uninteresting but at least had some semblance of plot and was watchable. This one however has a 131 minute running time where the basic plot, such as it was, could be achieved in an hour. It gets some points for some reasonable CGI werewolfs. There were a couple of moments that looked like things were hotting up for some action but they were gone as quick for more interminable girl moping about a vampire boredom.

It was in the new Cineworld where the room was so cold I swear I saw penguins looking bored in the next aisle.

To sum up - PISH. Michael Sheen pops up as a head vampire. Not sure why he is slumming it in this.

3/10. For the werewolfs and one of the female vampires being quite cute.

Also caught it last night and totally agree. 100% pretty and almost nothing original or impressive. Didn't think the '3D' was all that amazing either; It seemed like the main thing in each frame was quite deep but the rest of the picture seemed either flat or blurry?!? And what the fuck was with the volume?!?!? Was still a great experience though.

Were you in Cinema 8 by any chance....it's ridiculous. I was in that cinema last thursday and it was freezing with full air-con...went last night and same screen and they still didn't have it fixed. Got told I could come out in 15mins and get a new film for free...should fecking think so too.....altho I have cineworld card so not much use to me....blanket would have been nice!

Why open it when it's not working, why a week later is it still not fixed?!

No it was screen 7 - I did see the signs about 8 though...I'd taken my jacket off when I got in but ended up with it over me like a blanket. I also had to go out and find a staff member because the coloured strip lights up the sides remained on when the film had started - cue guy coming in to have a look, presumably in case I was leaving the film I'd paid 6 pound odd to get into to carry out some sort of wind up, and to tell me they would go off when the film starts. Yes, the film has already started, Einstein...they did go off soon after, presumably the highly efficient numbskull on projector duties forgot a switch on his idiot guide...

Went to see A Serious Man the other day. Very enjoyable. Not sure it's one of the Coens' very best but it's still got all the usual ingredients of their more humerous stuff. It's very Jewish, particularly at the beginning. A couple actually walked out bewildered during the opening sequence, perhaps because they thought they'd stumbled into a 'difficult' foreign film by mistake.

Today I returned to the Belmont to see The Red Shoes, which I'd never seen before. It's easy to see why it's a classic - incredibly bright and vivid, with great performances and set pieces. Proper old fashioned cinema - it must have been extraordinary in 1948.

Land of the Lost

Will Ferrell plays a scientist who invents a time machine and ends up in an alternative dimension with Anna Friel and Danny McBride. Cue battles with dinosaurs, lizard men and trees with living vines. It started off OK, Ferrell is intermittently funny but possibly only if you find him funny anyway. Fairly tailed off towards the end. The effects work was pretty good, ultimately a bit disappointing. 6/10.

Grizzly

An old 70's 'Jaws' rip off involving a rogue grizzly bear. I'd read a couple of positive reviews on Amazon and it was cheap so decided to check it out. Actually pretty dreadful. Poor acting, bad gore. I can imagine when I was a bairn it would have seemed ace on a Saturday evening. Actually came as a 2 disc special edition! Can't get too excited about watching the extras though.4/10.

I saw the latest Harry Potter film on DVD yesterday and was pretty disappointed. It was Ok but I think they try and make them darker for the sake of it as well as really lengthy. However I am more a dabbler than a fanatic of the lad Potter, still awesome cinematography and it looks good but in general I found it pretty dull. Maybe need to watch it again sometime, wasnt in the best frame of mind for a two hour plus Potter fest, I always find stuff like this you have to be in the right frame of mind for.

Got the new Star Trek film out as well, watched the first 20 mins last night and looked promising, again with the Trek, more a dabbler than a fanatic!

Nope was with a university mate. My Review [copy n pasted off my Facebook]

Just in from seeing Avatar; the plot was better than Iexpected, so was the effects, even the 3D rendering, to my suprise, but the 3D aspect didnt work for me, it was good in parts, like falling leaves, but overall didnt add much to the overall film really. Would have been more dramatic if the effects really did come... out at you more. Much rather watch Lord of the Rings of Star Wars for an epic style film like that

The Descent 2 - 5/10.

MASSIVE plotholes and some particularly stupid police.

Not to mention a telegraphed ending.

Massive potholes as well.

I watched a few things over Xmas and New Year, most of which I've forgotten already. Here's some one-word reviews:

Sex Drive - disappointing

Buffy The Vampire Slayer - nineties.

Beverly Hills Chihuahua - annoying.

Casino - too long (technically two words)

Goodfellas - Gangsterrific.

Pubic Enemies - talky.

Freddy vs Jason - unscary.

Local Hero - meh.

I'm hoping Stephen Graham gets a Best Supporting Actor nod at the Oscars for his amazing portrayal of Baby Face Nelson in Public Enemies, but due to the retarded way the Oscars works, it's unlikely.

A mixed bag of new purchases, oldies rewatched on BT Vision, Tesco DVD choices and new to the vid shop -

Moon

I really enjoyed this, for me one of those films where everything just meshes to give a perfect viewing experience - fantastic acting, visually stunning, amazing soundtrack, intriguing plot. Sam Rockwell is a lone astronaut on a 3 year stint on a mining base on the Moon, nearing the end of his trip when involved in an accident after which strange things start to happen. Can't say too much more without giving away the plot but Sam Rockwell, who I have always thought turns in a great performance as the only actor other than infrequent appearances on communication screens by a few others and the voice of Kevin Spacey as the base robot. Clint Mansell turns in another great piece of music that really adds to the atmosphere. 10/10.

The Proposal

Sandra Bullock plays a high flying literary agent from Canada who is about to be deported as her Visa is away to run out. She bribes her assistant Ryan Reynolds into agreeing to marry her to prevent being shipped back to Canada but the authorities see through the ploy. In order to appear more convincing she joins Reynolds in a trip home to Alaska to meet his family, etc etc. A chick flick I suppose but better than a lot of them, with a few good laughs and an unexpected near-nude scene from Bullock - I suppose it must be getting to that stage in her career where she needs to do such things. 6/10.

Lakeview Terrace

Patrick Wilson has a black wife and moves into a house next to Samuel L Jackson, a cop raising 2 kids after his wife died and who has an apparent disapproval of mixed race relationships and who proves to be a rather difficult neighbour. Shades of 'Unlawful Entry' and 'Pacific Heights' plotwise but Samuel L. does his usual good stuff and it's watchable enough. 7/10.

The Cable Guy

One I've never seen but kept reading decent things about, 2 quid in Asda so gave it a bash. Matthew Broderick splits from his girlfriend, gets a new place and on recommendation from a v.young Jack Black tries to bribe the cable installer, Chip Douglas (Jim Carrey), into giving him free cable. Chip however just wants friendship which leads to problems when he proves to be difficult to shake off. Actually not bad, Jim Carrey is in full on mode so if your not a fan best avoided. 7/10.

Midnight Run

An oldie on BT Vision that I never tire of, a bit 80's-tastic in many ways but still very entertaining. Robert De Niro's first and best venture into comedy - he is a bounty hunter trying to get Charles Grodin's embezzler from New York to LA to collect the reward money while avoiding the gangsters Grodin stole from, the FBI, a rival bounty hunter and the police. All modes of transportation are covered while the 2 main characters bicker and eventually find a bit of mutual respect. Best avoided on council telly as it is always badly edited as the swearing is quite full on but provides a lot of the funny lines. 9/10.

Knocked Up

I saw this before and wasn't overly impressed but after reading a recent article on Judd Apatow where this was held up as his best film I gave it another shot. I enjoyed it more overall but still find it overlong by about 20 minutes which I think was my main problem the first time. Seth Rogen does his usual goofy stoner thing, where he gets a more straight laced TV presenter pregnant and they try to make things work out - as is to be anticipated, things are a bit up and down. Some really funny lines, a lot of which comes from the supporting cast playing Seth's stoner mates. 8/10.
