Jersey Girl

I love Kevin Smith films but had just been plain uninterested in this one, I think partly because when it came out Ben Affleck was in that full on Jennifer Lopez + over-exposure period and also because I believed the reviews that said it was shit. Saw it cheap in a charity shop so decided to give it a go. Affleck plays a New York publicist married to Jennifer Lopez who due to unforeseen circumstances ends up having to raise their daughter while living with his Dad in New Jersey. And learns about family and stuff. Its actually a perfectly good film, a bit more sentimental than Smiths other films but that doesnt really make it a huge gush-fest. Its not like some chick flick. Some good funny moments and Liv Tyler is just beyond cute in it. George Carlin plays Bens Dad and is ace.

Marked for Death

Steven Seagal plays an ex-DEA agent who gets fed up with his life after his partner gets killed and he blasts shit out of a hooker so he goes back home to see his family and during a trip to a bar with his old army mate gets caught up in a shoot out involving the local Jamaican gangsters. He prevents one of them shooting a Colombian drug baron henchman type and so said Jamaican marks him for death, hence the title. The Jamaicans threaten and hurt his family until he and his mate take action. Not a bad effort actually.

Inside

Found this in FOPP IN Edinburgh for the grand sum of 2 quid. Its a French horror film and stars Beatrice Dalle who was Betty Blue. I didnt even know she was still making films and had never heard of this film but for 2 quid it seemed worth checking out. A young lass is pregnant and involved in a car crash in which her husband is killed. Cut to 4 months later and the baby is due the next day, which is also Christmas. She is alone in her house when a mysterious woman (Dalle) arrives at her door and starts menacing her. She then starts to kill various people who come to the house to help. This is all detailed on the DVD box so isnt really giving anything away. Its actually a pretty good watch, starts off well and kept me on edge for most of the first hour due to some clever camera work and use of shadows. The final half hour got a bit over the top and silly to be honest and the violence gets progressively more gruesome.

Here's an eclectic mix for you....

The Color Purple

Watched this for the first time the other night with my partner. Good human interest film that alternates between harsh reality and comic relief. A bit too twee and sugary for my tastes, but very watchable with some career-making performances by Whoopi Goldberg, Oprah Winfrey and Danny "I'm to old for this shit" Glover. 7/10

Pandorum

Well-made, but ultimately dull Event Horizon clone. Has it moments, but they're few and far between. It also has kung-fu fighting (those cats were fast as lightning) which I absolutely depise outside of Bruce Lee movies. 5/10

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

I didn't have my specs with me when I watched this, so I cheated a little and selected the dubbed version of this superb thriller. Terrific performances all-round with a believable cast - no ripped, toned, square-jawed fit blokes here, just good actors. Won't give too much of the plot away, but it's a sepentine murder mystery, that spans several decades. Only minor quibble is that the titular heroine's hacking skills are left a little unexplained. It all seems a bit too easy for her. 9/10

Exam

British-made psychological thriller about 8 candidates who are vying for a top job. They are told that they have to answer one question - only they don't know what he question is. The whole movie is set in the exam room, which makes for a claustrophobic atmosphere. Stars Jimi Mistry and Colin Salmon. Not bad at all. 7/10

King of New York

Superb Abel Ferrara gangster movie, starring Christopher Walken at his very best. Early roles for Laurence Fishburne and Steve Buschemi. Loads of action and quotable dialogue. 9/10

Miller's Crossing

Cohen Brother's classic gangster movie, starring Alber Finney, John Turturro and Gabriel Byrne. To be honest, it's not as good as I remembered it, but worthwhile nonetheless. 7/10

The People Next Door

My partner picked this pot-boiler TV movie out of the cheap racks. It's a based-on-true-events movie about a down-on-her-luck mother of three girls (Desperate Housewive's Nicolette Sheridan) , who moves into a ramshackle house after leaving her abusive husband. Basically, the nicey-nice childless couple next door kidnap two of the girls. 5/10

Up In The Air

While the main character's job was a little unnerving for me at this time (if I see anyone resembling George Clooney walk into my office in the next week or so I'm just going to get up and leave, save him the bother), the rest of the film was hugely enjoyable. Nice twist at the end that was flagged up early on but was subtle enough for me not to realise until just before it happened, no big neon signs in the film saying "THERE'S A TWIST!". Acting was great, the characters were funny and likeable (despite the fact that they basically sacked people for a living). It was a really good Friday night film.

A very quotable film....

You givin me the hi-hat?

Take your flunky and dangle!

16 Blocks - dreadful painting by numbers cop film for morons. 1/10

Brokeback Mountain - pretty powerful stuff with great performances. I like how they threw in some boobs to make it not as gay. 8/10

The Devil Wears Prada - pfffft. One decent monologue by Streep regarding how the proper fashion industry feeds eventually into supermarket fashion. Other than that a right load of old keech. 2/10

Zodiac - based on a true story hunt for a serial killer. Almost 3 hours long. The worst film I've watched in years.

I really liked this too.The type of role Clooney is just great at.

And Miller's Crossing is easily better than a 7!

Where were the boobs? I do not remember boobs. I do remember graphic scenes of buggery though.

You must be thinking of something from your gay porn collection, nothing graphic in this 15 certificate film (in fact wish it had been an 18, had some little kids in sniggering at all the gay bits when I went to see it at the cinema).

Both wives boobs were on display (Hathaway's very briefly). You'd maybe shot yer load by then and switched it off.

Speaking of good films with fantastic acting and boobs in them, I watched The Wrestler recently too. Affa good. 9/10.

Michelle Williams boobs? I have no recollection of this. You'd think I would as well, being a Dawson's Creek fan.

Anne Hathaway was in Brokeback Mountain?

There were boobs in the Wrestler?

I have bad boobs memory. This may be due to being a Dawson's Creek fan.

Marisa Tomei's (may have spelt that wrongly) tits were indeed on display in the Wrestler - and a fine pair they are at that!

She's got better with age as well, or maybe i'm just getting older and my tastes are changing. She was in a film i saw a few weeks back called Cyrus: avoid like the plague, nothing happens in it, it was shit 2/10 (of which those 2 points are exclusively for Marisa Tomei)

I assume you've seen The Gift though? If you like Dawson's Creek you should watch it (James Van Der Beek gets his cock out)

You should see 'Before the Devil Knows You're Dead'. She has a couple of surprising scenes in that. Sadly one of them involves being taken from behind by Philip Seymour Hoffman. I didn't really need to see that.

Cry of the Owl

Another FOPP 2 DVD that I had never heard of, it was actually my wife that fancied this one. It has Paddy Considine in it, which is good enough for me to give it a try, playing a guy called Robert Forrester who has recently recovered from depression and is in the final stages of a divorce with his wife (who is a complete bitch and I guarantee if you watch this you wish he would throw her out the window of the lawyers office). On his way home from work he often pretends his car has broken down and spies on a woman in a remote house, played by Julia Stiles. One night she catches him, but doesn't call the police and instead she invites him into her house. She seems a bit mental and tells Robert that fate has brought them together. Her boyfriend Greg is pissed off at being dumped and follows Robert in his car one night. He gets out of his truck and attacks Robert, they roll down a river bank, have a scuffle and Greg gets knocked out and falls in the river. Robert rescues him and leaves him sitting on the bank and next day gets a visit from the police as Greg is missing. It then gets a bit twisty-turny and there is a bit of a surprising turn of events that is never really explained, unless I missed something. This is watchable but ultimately quite frustrating as some of the behaviour shown seems quite irrational and as mentioned the motives behind some of the events remained unexplained and hence confusing. The ending was a bit unsatisfying as well. It is based on a book, perhaps that makes things clearer

As a huge fan of Tony Jaa's work, I was incredibly excited to find Ong Bak 3 in Asda. The excitement faded pretty fast when I realised how incredibly bad the film is. Couple half-decent fight scenes and the sudden use of wires in Mr Jaa's films is NOT what I was expecting. Horrendous film - if you liked any of his other films, DON'T watch it - it'll make you want to launch an armed assault on his monastary.

Pretty sure this is the Jaa film with the massive backstory. Basically, he'd had enough of films and buggered off into the wilderness to become a monk. Studios wanted another Ong Bak film so they got him out of retirement through his old contractual commitments - he got dragged back to the set, fatter and way less willing than before. The final cut was so bad that they used a heap of footage from the 2nd film to beef it up. Tragic as the first two were pretty ace.

Would really recommend Flashpoint with Donnie Yen. Fucking ace MMA based action flick. Donnie Yen > Tony Jaa (and way less cheesy)

Recently, I've seen

800 Bullets: Should have been much better, boring story about washed up stunt men in Spain.

Breaking News: Critique of modern 24/7 media mixed with a generic asian cop flick.

.

Fermat's Room: quite a tense and enjoyable Saw / Die Hard 3 with brains.

Coffy: Brillian 'Blaxploitation' with some unforgettable characters, sleazy story and Pam Grier as one of the sexiest women in any film ever.

Zombie Beach party: A b-movie ode to wrestling and zombie flicks, works a little bit but very cheap.

Mystic River: Probably Eastwood's finest effort. Entire cast are brilliant, story's bleak but gripping. Awesome.

Welcome to the Jungle: Walken is Walken, William-Scott is Stiffler and Dwane Johnson is The Rock. Pretty enjoyable middle of the roadness.

Bullet in the Head: Powerful story is lost in an OTT and corny Hong Kong action fest - if that's your thing though, worth looking at.

I'm a cyborg, but that's OK Fantastic story that exports well. Weird film, punchy, visual orgasm, well acted and very Asian. Unforgettable. Will be re-watching again soon.

Fulltime Killer: cat-and-mouse hitman story about two of Asia's finest. Some cool shootouts and epic visuals.
