Hard drive only showing half of it's capacity

I have never seen any problems with disc sizes in XP.

Try running diskpart (from command line) then use LIST DISK to see if it treats the missing space as free space or not. If it does, try booting from an NTFS boot disk and running DISKPART.

> DISKPART

DISKPART> LIST DISK

DISK ### | Status | Size | Free

---------------------------------------

Disk 0 | Online | 136 GB | whatever GB

DISKPART> SELECT DISK 0 (provding disk 0 is the disk)

DISKPART> LIST VOLUME

(as above but volumes..)

DISKPART> SELECT VOLUME 1 (providing 1 is the volume)

DISKPART > EXTEND

It should then extend the partition to the full size...

Um, that is not a 500 gig drive. Look at what is detected by the bios at boot time, because you appear to have a 250 gig drive.

Yeah sorry, I put a 250 in to try it earlier.

Same thing as was happening with the 500 though.

In the BIOS it comes up fine as 250Gb, it's just when windows loads it reverts to 127Gb.

I'm formatting the unallocated space that is on the disc and putting a new partition in........

Read my post again...boot with an NTFS boot disk (perhaps the windows recovery console has diskpart?)....you can't extend a boot volume when it's live!!

can you post a fullscreen one, it may be more helpful

Put the hdd in as a slave hdd then use diskmgr.msc to format/merge the partitions

Is it xp home or pro?

MattJimF

same problem solved here

It's SP2. Which is weird, as I know it's SP1 that can only handle up to 130 odd Gb.

I'll check that setting when I get home tonight.

Cheers dude.

Im assuming sp2 is installed

Sp2 is indeed installed. It made no difference.

I've just used the empty space that disk manager found to create another partition, so i've got 2 120Gb spaces.

That should keep me going, i'll just put all my documents etc on the second partition.

Thanks for all your help guys.

Would still like to work out how to fix this issue at some point.... bloody computers. Ah well, at least I updated my BIOS ;)

Next time you reinstall windows delete bolth partitions and create one large one, it is possible the manufacturers partitioned it with smaller ones so that it is compatible with pre sp2 xp and other older os's
