Recommended Posts

Hello, hello! First post. It has been a pretty awesome year for music, looking back I think I'm going with the following:

1. The National - Boxer

2. Modest Mouse - We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank

3. The Field - From Here We Go Sublime

4. Stars - In Our Bedroom After The War

5. Bright Eyes - Cassadaga

6. Band Of Horses - Cease To Begin

7. GoodBooks - Control

8. The Kissaway Trail - The Kissaway Trail

9. Menomena - Friend And Foe

10. Laura Veirs - Saltbreakers

Also Beirut, Arcade Fire, Jens Lakeman, Caribou, Bloc Party, Kings of Leon, Explosions In The Sky, Feist, Fields, Deerhoof, Architecture in Helsinki, Idlewild and Malcolm Middleton...

Good work there, British bands...

I have enjoyed the following and I think they all came out this year but can't be arsed checking -

Earth ~ Hibernaculum

Shellac ~ Excellent Italian Greyhound. The opening 2 songs are still to be topped by any other band and I'm warming to the rest.

UNKLE ~ War Stories

Tinariwen ~ Aman Iman:Water Is Life

Thurston Moore ~ Trees Outside The Academy

The Fall ~ Reformation Post T.L.C.

Les Savy Fav ~ Let's Stay Friends

Murder By Death ~ In Bocca Al Lupo

Nick Cave/Warren Ellis ~ The Assassination Of Jesse James by The Coward Robert Ford

PJ Harvey ~ White Chalk, great return to form after the dodgy Uh Huh Her.

High On Fire ~ Death Is This Communion

Baroness ~ Red Album (nice one Scott)

There's probably more..

nobody mentioned anything about release dates, so 2005's Edan - Beauty And The Beat is officially the best album I only found out about this year, and he is one of the highlights of my gigging year also.

An excellent album. Primitive Plus is good too, but nowhere near as good as that one. Where did you see him live?

yeah i've never got into primative plus much, but BATB is just so consistently amazing. saw him at ATPminehead in may, with dagha guesting, it was amazing, some of the shit was just played with an acoustic guitar through distortion&delay, he was beat juggling with one hand and rapping into his mic in the other, and during 'rock n roll', dagha had LPs of every single band/album namechecked in the song, and chucked them down one by one as edan ticked 'em off!

Top ten might be something like this:

Alasdair Roberts 'The Amber Gatherers'

Efterklang 'Under Giant Trees' & 'Parades'

Electrelane 'No Shouts, No Calls'

Jeffrey Lewis '12 Crass Songs'

Lisa Knapp 'Wild and Undaunted'

Monkey Swallows the Universe 'The Casket Letters'

Nina Nastasia & Jim White 'You Follow Me'

Paula Frazer & Tarnation 'Now it's Time'

Rachel Unthank & the Winterset 'The Bairns'

Voice of the Seven Woods 'Voice of the Seven Woods'

Of these, the one I keep coming back to is Monkey Swallows the Universe 'The Casket Letters'. Wonderful record.
