I don't think Snafu is over-priced drinks-wise at all. A pint of Tennents is 2.20. Pretty reasonable in my book. Or maybe it's 2.40...either way; still relatively inexpensive.

It's certainly cheaper than the cocking tunnels.

Although both would benefit from having a belhaven best type product on the taps. I grow weary from the choice of various types of fizzy pish or Guinness.

Without meanig to contradict myself - I've had mixed experiences at Snafu - it is actually one of my favoured places to go...just think it's slightly over-priced. 8 on a routine night, just to keep out the riff-raff? As with the music, you hear something really good, which you haven't heard before and wouldn't hear in other clubs, then all of a sudden you're in a wedding reception or school disco - 'how does it feeeeeel' - which kind of makes this exclusive reputation seem slightly unmerited.

Jesus! Mo looks even more evil than normal in that pic . I'll second Koolsville's sentiment, and most of the other folk on here in saying well done, and Snafu really deserve it. It's a highly impressive balancing act to retain the authentically underground programming of the The Pelican / Subway, but in non-skanky surroundings where, I reckon it is normally fairly quick to get served, and there's a really ice range of drinks. To make a success of being a live venue, & comedy nights, innovative magazine too, is even more impressive. As well as Mo & Amanda's hard work, tenacity and bravery I think they've got really good folk around them, as Steven says above. And the Dirty Hearts night seems to have been a masterstroke too.

As for not Snafu not being in the same being league as the Arches, I love the Arches too, but it's Weedgie-centric non-sense to say Snafu isn't in the same league.

I agree entirely. As much as I love The Tunnels, and as crucial as it is to the Aberdeen music scene, the selection and price of beer and lager is very poor. Aberdeen has many ale drinkers. Cater for us!

Playing music no one has heard before does not make it good music....does it....??

Playing a balance of Underground music and music that people are familior with is what it's all about.

I really like Snafu as a venue and well done for winning the prize. I do have to agree with Kimy on his point though. Had some kick ass nights in there. Actually the last one I went to was girls on top or something and it was great, real energy club night, that you find hard to get elsewhere in Aberdeen or anywhere really. In contrast to that, the previous night I went to I was enjoying a lot until the DJ started playing a strange selection of tunes which were barely in line with what was being played earlier. This totally threw me so I had to leave. I was there for a dose of quality electro dancing ... It seemed as though this musical tangent happened because the dancefloor wasn't full but I didn't pay a reasonably large entrance fee for an electro night to listen to the clash.

But well done, mine is a fairly minor quibble.

There is absolutely f*ck all wrong with hearing the Clash in a club, they are easilly one of the best bands to come out of this Country and their music sounds more relevant and timeless than most of the sh*t that is comming out now and calling itself "Electro" or "ElectroClash".

Not everyone wants to listen to Electro all night long, it's quite good to hear other styles of music in a DJ set.....it gets quite boring when a DJ stays in the same groove all night.

Each to there own / different strokes for different folks though!!

That's why Exodus exists. Why have every club playing every style of music? Anyone can go anywhere and have a great time because they are gauranteed to like one in every ten songs.. Thus said I assume Aberdeen is too small to support any reasonably sized contingent of people who are actually interested in music. Not griping; this is elementary, I just think Snafu could get away with being more adventurous.

Not every club plays every style of music....certainly not the last time I checked.(Usually predictable Indie/Electro/House or full on sh*t pop)

I also never said that every club should play every style of music, just keep it interesting by mixing it up a bit. Make it look like the dj has been djing for more than a few weeks and is not just playing whatever the latest trendy music genre is, which at the moment seems to be Electro.....IndieElectro/ElectroClash/ElectroHouse...etc....I love Electro, but it gets a bit boring hearing it everywhere and for a whole night.

There is a massive difference to hearing random pop songs somewhere like Exodus where you might aswell have an iPod on shuffle compaired to a DJ who is properly programming and building a set mixing up old or new: House, Electro, Techno, Disco, Rock, Pop or whatever else they feel like playing.....hearing something like the Clash in a set like this is completely different.

You have a bit of a point about "Aberdeen being too small.....to support people who are interested in music" very true, it's really hard to get people to check out nights when they have not heard of the guest.....some of the best music I have heard in clubs in Aberdeen has been nights with quite a poor turnout because people obviously had not heard of the guest or could not be arsed going to something that was not played on Radio1 or on the cover of Mixmag.

It sucks ass even more when it costs you money to put something like that on and you make a loss.

Bigger cities like Glasgow, Manchester or London obviously have more people who are into alternative or specialist music so they can get away with being more Adventurous.

Really curious to know what more Adventurous types of Nights or guests that you think Snafu could be putting on, what suggestions do you have in mind.....??

I don't go to Snafu every week so I am just commenting on a one off experience. I just found the mood change in the music out of place that night.

I'm not a DJ but generally a DJ set in a night club will be in a certain genre. Maybe I'm old fashioned but if I'm dancing and getting into the music, which is chosen by the DJ who knows their genre well, the last thing I want is for the genre to flip on it's head in the last 30 minutes. The clash song was merely the turning point of that night, I was not commenting on the quality of the tune/band. I appreciate that not everyone is into electro or dance music in general but there really are plenty of places that cater for different tastes. If there is a night of music that I don't fancy I go somewhere else.

I will reiterate that I have had some cracking nights in Snafu, the latest one was the best I've had in ages and conformed to my opinion of what makes a good club night.

Doesn't have to be a real ale. Loads of places offer something like Belhaven Best or Tennents Velvet/Ember which give a more flavoured, smoother drink without having to have the real ale taps.

At the moment there is no in between, just tasteless, fizzy lager drinks or Guinness. I like Guinness but it's too heavy to drink all night.

Anyway next time I'm there I'll give the Brew Dog a try, can I ask how much a bottle costs?

the reason that it wouldn't be unfeasible is due to the fact that we really have virtually no demand for real ale what-so-ever.

in addition, we have to look at what is most financially viable for us. as you know we have limited bar space, and it would be unjustified to get rid of one of our other draughts that is in constant high demand to replace it with something that has very little demand and would therefore only incur additional expenses and wastage that we are not in a position to do .

as a club we probably pour a wider draught selection than most with tennents, staropramen, hoegarden, guiness, becks vier and cider. our fridges are pretty well stocked too - (brew dog - ale, peroni, tiger, corona, red stripe, budweiser, budvar, magners and koppaberg) so there is something for everyone! that's the best we can do currently!!

and to answer your other question, brew dog retails between 2.70 during the week and 3.10 at weekends.(every club/bar drinks prices change depending on time of the week )
