THE PICTISH TRAIL with THE FENCE COLLECTIVE

The Picts lived in north and east Scotland in the 3rd to 9th centuries AD. We know little of their history as very few records survive. Today, Johnny Lynch resides in the East Neuk of Fife and runs Fence Records with Kenny Anderson. His recorded output to date as The Pictish Trail is SOLD OUT.

Normally, The Pictish Trail has a penchant for madcap folky nonsense, soft melodic meandering, and custard creams. Here, he takes the weird and wonderful Fence Collective out with him on tour to carry his guitars and make him tea. Currently comprising of King Creosote, James Yorkston, OnTheFly, Uncle Beesly and Captain Geeko this band will blow your preconceptions of Fence being folk out of the water.

ZIGGY CAMPBELL

Ziggy Campbell was brought up in Hawick. His father wasnt a butcher and he never had the brow for rugby so he wrote songs instead. He formed hi-tech lo-fi pop experimentalists FOUND in 2005.

A label called FENCE RECORDS decided they liked FOUND and wanted to release their latest album. Johnny who runs FENCE said that Ziggy was a truly unique voice and a songwriter with fresh ideas.

These fresh ideas include developing a sideline solo project which is being unwrapped with staggering effect and never FOUND wanting...

JO FOSTER

Jo Foster, painter potter and piano player, writes melody-strong songs which she sings to piano or guitar or whatever is at hand. Her diy approach has been a fave of The Fence Collective where she made a kind of debut at their annual Homegame, finally taking her songs to the stage.

She has recently toured as support for The Aliens and is probably best known for writing 'Oh Catherine' which she recorded for Lone Pigeon's debut album Concubine Rice. Lately, shows have seen Jo on stage with additional musicians as her songs lend themselves to a harmony rich sound as well as the intimate experience her solo shows bring. Interesting Music regulars will remember her outstanding performance at the Ivor Cutler tribute in January.

some recent is this music? reviews of The Pictish Trail

whilst supporting Bill Callahan

In the red corner: The Johnny Lynch led Fence Collective tag team that is The Pictish Trail. Featuring James Yorkston and King Creosote, tonight they are practically a beginners guide to what exactly theyre feeding them in the Easy Neuk of Fife. And, the music kinda does that too. Nestling somewhere between the traditional and the avant, the slight songs seem to exist purely to facilitate the jamming parts. Which is understandable, because its when the instrumental passages seem to hit some kind of groove that the pieces slot into place. So, patchy with some flashes of brilliance - as I said a beginners guide

on the latest Fence sampler

Pictish Trail offer the gentle and accomplished psychedelic folk-pop of All I Own, an effective, sweetly meandering song that climaxes in an uplifting, hypnotic ending.

as part of the recent King Creosote tour

Joined by the band on the second song Nooks its clear just how together they are as a live act, particularly with fellow Fence Collective member Johnny Lynch AKA the Pictish Trail on guitar (and vocals to melt your heart). Indeed the harmonies and chiming guitars of Mr. Lynch should not be underestimated as to the impact on the live impact of these songs.

well in Aug we toddled off to London to see Field Day Festival in Victoria Park

great idea, lovely setting, however turned into shambles due to far too many people

being let in, and many many substandard performanances, sound problems etc. etc.....

(ask me & i'll tell you who, before people waste their money going to see one of them

coming to Aberdeen).

On the day three or four artists were simply fantastic. one of which were The Pictish Trail

& The Fence Collective, with the IDENTICAL line-up as playing they were

our IMP event they were simply superb entertainment, musically/rapport wise great

to see a band playing together as a band without pretension & playing some

really lovely music & having a hoot on stage............

ALSO THIS FRIDAY - THE PICTISH TRAIL, WITH THE FENCE COLLECTIVE, IN ABERDEEN

Foos yer doos? THE PICTISH TRAIL (um, that's me) is playing a one-off show at the Tunnels in Aberdeen - with a Fence Collective all-star band. The gig is part of a series of shows organised by Sound Scotland (www.sound-scotland.co.uk) and Interesting Music (www.myspace.com/interestingmusic). I'm looking forward to it. I'm even going to stand up whilst playing this time.

Support comes courtesy of ZIGGY CAMPBELL - front-man of patchwork-popstars FOUND. He's doing a solo turn, accompanied by all manner of electronic devices. JO FOSTER completes the bill - just piano and voice - singing her dreamy pop songs.

THE PICTISH TRAIL with THE FENCE COLLECTIVE

+ ZIGGY CAMPBELL (FOUND) + JO FOSTER

The Tunnels, Carnegies Brae, Aberdeen, AB10 1BF.

SOME PRESS FOR FOUND's NEW ALBUM - 'THIS MESS WE KEEP RESHAPING'

We've just put out a new album from a band called FOUND, entitled 'This Mess We Keep Reshaping'. Eleven tracks of bleep-hop song wizardry, that'll make you shuffle, sway and shoogle.

At the moment, it's available on limited release from AVALANCHE RECORDS in Edinburgh, ROUGH TRADE in London, and via the Fence Records webshop (www.fencerecords.com). It will be available from select stores, nationwide, from December 3rd.

Heres what the press have been saying ...

"Theirs is an ever-evolving musical voyage gliding somewhere between The Earlies psychedelic pulse, Arab Straps woozy wonder-pop and an explosion in an Indie vinyl pressing plant. Its a bolt-blue mash up of folk, high-wired synth stabs and Tetris snare pops." Clash

"Lead singer Ziggy Campbells introspective patter and crisp tone guide you through the musical undergrowth. Along the way there are frolicsome tubas (Some Fracas of a Sissy), serenading mandolins (Gifted), and a sampler versus distortion pedal catfight (Reshaping), showcasing the experimental terrain that now defines nu folk." Observer Music Monthly

"Brilliant... fantastic circuit-bleepy-bloppy" Huw Stephens, Radio One

"Unpredictable, noisy, melodic, daft, electronic-art-pop." The Skinny

"A grown-up, slick sonic treat, and surely... especially now that it comes with the Fence seal of approval... this could be the album that opens them up to a wider audience." The List

"This is modern psychedelia that owes little to the music of the 60s and everything to the present and future... This Mess is full of the kind of cut and paste, lo-fi treats you would associate with the likes of Super Furry Animals and FOUND have made an album which reflects both the bleak winters of Scotland and the uplifting warmth in the hearts of the people." Is This Music

You can listen to tracks from the album, as well as a recent session for Huw Stephens on Radio One, on their MySpace. The band will also be in session for Vic Galloway, on Radio One, on November 21st at midnight.
