ZeromiserY
does anyone know a lot about these stop error screens and why they occur and how to stop them? i've tried the forums but they are beyond my technological ability to understand them. dont get me wrong i have a decent footing in computers but this is so far out of my league.i get very regular visits to the blue screen and i have no idea of how to go about fixing it. it occurs even after a fresh install of vista or xp media centre ed' sp 2, also can occur during a set up.is there a diagnostic tool you can use or a "correct" process of elimination? i know drivers or various other settings can cause them. they mainly occur for me when surfing the net (not porn sites before anyone goes there) , using things with visualisations and especially when i try to convert video files. this does seem point to the video/graphics card but i think it could be the ram or motherboard. it crashe EVERY time i try to convert video files. long winded post so thanks in advance to anyone who who bothers to read to the end.edit, i'm using vista at the moment and would prefer to solve this using vista if possible. amd athlon xp 2400+524mb ram. 32 bit OS
MattJimF
If you have the stop codes you can generally get an idea of what is wrong with that, google and a bit of elimination.

MattJimF
there are issues with NVIDIA and Vista i've been having cronic problems, and every so often my comp freezes. everything i've tried doesn't seem to do anything to help. I just put up with it and hope SP1 will fix these bugs.
ZeromiserY
there is a beta version of SP1 available if you look in the right places. i cant post it coz the mods will have a fit but if you want it i'll pm you. let me know.im having no problems on my main pc with nvidia and vista!it also happened when my OS was xp media centre edition SP 1 or
The Kernel Loaf
As someone mentioned, it is highly likely to be a video card issue and compatibility with Vista. Check out the Nvidia site and see if there are any fixes for your card.
Stripey
If the crashes usually happen when you're doing something cpu intensive, it could be caused by overheating, check the cpu heatsink and fan aren't clogged up with dust. I would have thought the pc would restart.
Stripey
Does that cause a BSoD? I would have thought the pc would restart.Yeah, it can. Those xp series athlon chips in my experience can be quite susceptible to it.
ZeromiserY
it is pretty dusty. will give it a good clean and test it out tomorrow. as i said though its not just vista it crashes with. had identical problems with xp. its resorted more to just screen freezes than stop errors. also, when doing the updates for (via shutdown) vista it gets to update number 3 then stops (it keeps ticking over but doesnt go any further) i tried doing it manually from the update centre but that doesnt work either. just says "preparing to install" constantly. thanks for the advice guys. this is well outwith my usual area of expertise! TR!ΔNGL€ T€€TH
There's a guy at my work has the blue screen of death as his screensaver. It also simulates windows rebooting and returning to the error. I want it.I want that too!
Neil
I want that too!Seek and ye shall find: BlueScreen Screen Saver v3.2Getting back to the original topic I suggest you take a note of the STOP error code and then search for it in Microsoft's Knowledge Base:Microsoft Help and SupportTaking note of the system driver that has caused the problem can also be another giveaway. e.g. if it's the graphics card driver then try updating your graphics card drivers to their latest version to see if that fixes the problem etc.

ZeromiserY
Press F8 during boot, choose "disable automatic restart on system failure"cheers stripey. is this a possible solution to my problem or will this just make the fucker crash so i can see the error screen? Stripey
cheers stripey. is this a possible solution to my problem or will this just make the fucker crash so i can see the error screen?no it just means when it does crash the bluescreen will stay on until you reset the pc, so at least you can look up the error code.
