Guest Steven Dedalus
Are you sure - I thought it was The Vanster who delivered that line. I do stand to be corrected though...Sure, Van doesn't speak with a New Orleans accent! He speaks with a bizarre transatlantic hybrid of Norn Irish and American. Guest DustyDeviada
Probably the same as whatever went through Bowie's warped mind when he duetted with Bing Crosby on "Little Drummer Boy" - "...ah-rumpa-pum-pum..."A toe-curler of the highest orderAh man, that's one of my favourite Christmas tunes, love hearing it every year! And the "video" for it is ace too, when they're chatting about music at the start. Bing looks like a waxwork dummy mind, but the voice was still there.

historicrocker
Inspired by the Pavarotti thread.....Are there any covers as bad as Madonna's truly horrible version of "American Pie"?I would like to draw your attention to Katie Melua's cover of "Lilac Wine".....Girl Aloud's "I Think We're Alone Now" has to be up there.....Will Young and Gareth Gates warbling version of "The Long And Winding Road".....in fact, has there ever been a good Beatles cover?David Bowie's weird and wonderful version of "Alabama Song" is almost unlistenable....Lets hear your thoughts. I quite like Katie Melua's cover in fact. I'd put her aside Norah Jones in her success in transforming something quite lonesome into something better. Norah Jones' "The Long Way Home" I might even prefer to the Tom Waits version from time to time.
historicrocker
Don't get me wrong, the Tom Waits original is far better and I will never tire of it. Norah Jones just has a lovely voice though. As for Katie Melua's Lilac Wine; I don't think it makes me feel half as lonesome as Jeff Buckley's version. delboy
Yep, was Dr John. Some decent artists involved in that as well, Lou Reed, Emmylou Harris, what the hell were they thinking?'our UK record sales are well down - better do a charidee record for some publicity'

Alkaline
Jamie Cullum is going out with Sophie Dahl, which is quite funny in itself seen as though she's about a foot taller than him.I like that Crosby/Bowie collaboration. I think there might be two versions of the video too, one with all the nausea inducing christmas based schtick removed from the start. Alan Cynic
I quite like that cover actually!Still crap compared to the original.Mind you, I'm not a Bowie fan, so the 'Pin Ups' album is hard work for me.I was going to nominate Amy McDonald covering 'Good Vibrations' but then I remembered it was only a nightmare I'd had.Phew!! Guest bluesxman
I've just remembered Rod Stewart's plundering of Tom Waits' material to deplorable effect - 'Downtown Train' and 'Tom Traubert's Blues'.

In fact, Steve Earle's cover of it deserves to be in the "best covers" thread.

Guest Tam o' Shantie
Any cover that ironically tackles a genre that is the complete opposite of the music that the artist plays, to be wacky. Such as a one man acoustic act playing a death metal song, or vice versa. I can't think of a specific example right now. The exception to this is some of the Richard Cheese stuff, because some of that shit really swings, and it's also in the category of comedy. Diesel
Not a widely known song (Jester & GraemeC will know it!), but the Cosmic Rough Riders cover of the Sensational Alex Harvey Band's "Action Strasse" is up there with the best of the worst.Absolutely dire. Alan Cynic
I was only joking about Rasputin, but I have been known to do unlikely covers (eg Slade's 'Coz I luv you'), so ....guilty as charged (but I always liked the song;( )How about Amy Grant doing 'Big Yellow Taxi'...offal! Guest DustyDeviada
I actually think the cover of Jolene on your ATADTKCW series (was it February?) was one of the best tunes so far.
