I attempted to buy one off this site, but it asked for a validation code which it said would be sent to my e-mail address. Got an e-mail from them, but it just says "Your Play-Digital account needs validating" - what gives?

For this month only there is a half price sale at Play Digital Download Web-site.....

Buy one of the tracks for only 50p......

Dear Stuart & Black Matter

Yes I would have to agree with both of you ....... at present it is a digi-label

The initial plan was to release CD singles for each release but my music label advisor has advised me to release the first three on digital release only, then release a CD compiltation .......

I have also looked at releasing 7 inches as well ..... I think that could also be an interesting option down the line.......

My music label advisor was a manager in Fopp before it closed down believed that i would find it difficult to sell the singles on their own, especially as im just starting out, and in the past he has seen so many labels have one release and thats it?

Therefore it is only on digital release at present ...... but im certainly hoping for things to change ..... unfortunately all my promotional materials says Record label .....

Do you think if i released a CD it would then be known as a record label or is that name only reserved for those who release vinyl????

Thoughts Please?

plenty of labels stay away from vinyl and put out cd /digital only. I think it's a good way to start the label off, much less expenses and scope for losing money (unfortunately pretty important hurdles to overcome when you're starting out) but I would recommend that you mention plans for future releases, or throw the name about as a label that intends to specialise in cd, vinyl and digital releases (of which the first X just happen to be digital only). the reissue idea would also be good, but I would also say that if you're fancying going down the vinyl route that 12" would be more suitable for DJs (just easier to spin in a live environment) especially if the future releases will also feature hiphop/house/dnb etc. on the other hand, I'm not sure how many serious DJs use vinyl anymore, serato etc seems to have taken its place overnight from what i've seen and heard (there will always be purists though!)

Thanks for your feedback Tam o'shantie. I am currently in the process of signing my next release. I do agree with you about the 12inches being best for DJs, but at this stage will follow your line of advice and just release it digital followed by a mix cd after release 3. All feedback and advice at this stage is great. CAptain Tom has also been giving me a few tips as well....

New remixers for my next release are Whispers (Aberdeen), DJ Mot (Orlando who was Motley Crew's Old Touring DJ) and Marco (kia-aura DJ who now resides in Barcelona). I am also looking for some new local talent interesting in remixing the releases. Cant promise you a fortune but if its good enough then will get it out there?

It doesn't matter what the format is, if you're releasing recorded music then you're a record label. The way CD sales are plummeting, it won't be terribly long before selling physical product will be a thing of the past and reduced to specialist niche retailers.

Some deranged folk will tell you that you're not a record label if you're not a member of MCPS, PRS, PPL, and AIM. Ignore. While it's useful in terms of royalties and income flow to be a member of these things, it's not required to be a record label.

Good luck with your label and if you need any help or support, drop me a PM.

my talent is questionable but wouldn't mind seeing what's available? i've got the beat that's sweet and the jive that's alive, and would like to work on any hip hop / break beat stuff you might have?
