BOREDOMS

Celebrating their 20th anniversary, the legendary Japanese avant-garde rock band Boredoms bring a visceral live experience to Aberdeen for the first time and Scotland for only the second. Comprised of three drummers and a keyboard-playing turntables-mashing vocalist, they have wowed audiences the world around for the best part of two decades, playing to sell-out crowds, garnering much critical acclaim and becoming firm favourites of Nirvana and Sonic Youth as well as performing regularly at the All Tomorrow's Parties festivals.

Boredoms' experiments in post-rock, kraut-rock and space-rock have led to them to being called "the most out-there band in the world", with their record Super Ae described as one of the best albums of the 90s by Pitchforkmedia.com. However, their live performances are where they truly shine - bringing their beautiful, melodic, sometimes tribal music to life on stage, with an absolutely unparalleled live show. Aberdeen, meet Osaka.

MICHAEL GIRA

Also on this superb double bill is Michael Gira - owner of Young God Records which spawned Devendra Banhart amongst many other luminaries. Michael also founded the influential Swans. Now armed with a sombre voice and an acoustic guitar, he makes bare and direct folk-tinged, song-based but still crucial music.

Recently performed an utterly thrilling acoustic set (The Independent) at Indian Summer. Not to be missed. Seriously

for the price of a cd & a couple of pint's you have the chance to see in your home city one of the most extraordinary live bands. I believe this is a never to be repeated opportunity, unless lots of maybe's become attenders.

The performance's 77 full 5-piece, 3 cymbal drum kits will be arranged in a circular pattern, spiraling out from the center like a coiled snake, where the Boredoms' own drum kits and Eye' s electronic instruments will sit atop a raised platform. Joining the Boredoms will be 74 additional drummers, 10 of whom will serve as drum leaders and cue the rest.

The volunteer army of drummers represent many of the best players in New York City's avant/experimental underground and were selected by the event's music director Hisham Bharoocha. They come from a diverse group of bands and musicians who have drawn influence and inspiration from the Boredoms throughout the group's 20-year career, including, Tim Dewit and Lizzi Bougatsos of Gang Gang Dance, David Grubbs, Hart Mingus of Negative Approach, Matthias Schulz of Holy Fuck, and members of Aa, Crash Worship, God Is My Co-Pilot, Sunburned Hand of the Man, Oneida, Excepter, Antietam, Dymaxion, Panthers, and many others. The full line-up of drummers will be finalized this week.

Boredoms Put Out Call for 77 Drummers

Psych-loving, post-millennial krautrock drummers: this is your chance. Legendary Japanese collective Boredoms, led by the enigmatic Eye, have put out a call for drummers to fill out their oft-postponed "77 Drum" performance installation.

As previously reported, the piece calls for 77 drummers to join the band for a performance in Brooklyn on July 7. But now, that performance has a location: the lawn of the Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park section of Brooklyn Bridge Park. The free show is in celebration of the band's 20th anniversary and will take place at 5 p.m. (doors open at 3 p.m.).

Boredoms need volunteer drummers to fill out the ensemble, and a handful of those 77 will serve as drum leaders from whom the rest will take their cues. Though we don't expect this thing to be particularly organized, it's hard to imagine it not being at least 74 or 75 different kinds of cool.

Interested drummers should contact Hisham Bharoocha (currently of Soft Circle and formerly of Lightning Bolt and Black Dice) at [e-mail address retracted at Bharoocha's request] for more information. Former Minuteman/current Stooge Mike Watt and Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley are helping to spread the word about the performance, so there should be all sorts of cool people involved.
