Guest Kilgore Trout
discuss:if punk rock "broke" in 1991 is the genre/mindset/world view dead and redundant now?what constitutes rebellion and freedom in these homoginous times? am i getting old or does everything pretty much sound the same?i like a lot of current stuff the problem is that i'm not seeing anything really new just revisions and tweaking of specialist genre's, everythimg just starts to sound interchangeable.suggestions, links etc wellcomed, regardess of spelling and gramatical errors.i find a lot of new bands dull or at the worst "fake", for example i find the whole anti folk movement cold, two dimensional and lacking conviction..... Shaki
Being signed to a "major" gives you the ability to get your punk music/message across to the most people possible but then you could do that these days with a myspace account and a lot of hard work. Can you be a punk band and have a myspace page?!! What about punk bebo bands? Bebo is the new punk? Are these just words off the top of my head or is there a point? Guest Jake Wifebeater
Punk/HC has suffered a great deal of damage as a result of condescending middle-class authoritarians trying to tell people what to think. The damage isn't irrepairable, bands like Rupture and Netjajev SS are proof of that. Can you be punk and on a major? No. If you need to ask why, you've kinda missed the whole point. Teabags
People keep raving about Gallows. And I've seen some live stuff on Rock Sound. And I don't see whats so special about them.Whole In The Head, War All The Time, Krupskaya etc etc, much better British "punk" if you ask me. Can you be a punk band and have a myspace page?!! What about punk bebo bands? Bebo is the new punk? Are these just words off the top of my head or is there a point? The way I see it - there's nothing wrong with having a myspace or bebo page - the punk bands of the 70's did what they could to get their music/message out there but their resources were alot more limited back then - myspace doesn't cost anything to use & it's another channel to get your music out there. As for punk bands being on majors - I used to really hate the idea - calling yourself punk basically meant that you couldn't be on a major, ever. But then, if three fuckups can come from nowhere with some cheap guitars & convince a major to sign them (and not auditioning like manufactured 'artists') then doesn't that make them even more punk? Surely refusing a major deal just to be punk isn't punk.

Alkaline
I guess it depends to what extent you are Punk. If you just play the music and don't adopt the ideals then recording on a major wouldn't be a problem. But to those who view at as a lifestyle as well then it would. Horses for courses.
