Stripey
BBC NEWS | UK | UK sailors captured at gunpointThis happened before a few years ago and the soldiers were released within a few days. It's nothing to get excited about. Iran is being particularly restrained. If a nation like france were to be occupied by lets say, nazi germany, and german boats and their crew operating out of france strayed into british waters, naturally they would be either be arrested or more likely shot by british forces, and noone in britain would complain about it. The arguments in the media that Iran should hand back the soldiers immediately are completely irrational.

Hog
I hate how Tony Blair would actually be prepared to "take things further" just for Iran holding soldiers and questioning them. The UK and the US think that they are above other countries and everything is done on their terms. Im not a proud brit.

Stripey
Is iran actually occupied at the moment?uhm no, Iran, aka Persia hasn't been occupied for a very long time, infact it's got a long long history of being not occupied.
Ollie
Ah right, I wasnt sure if America had been preparing to invade or not. It seems as if the media are starting to stir some shit up anyway. Does anyone think iran will be invaded?

Stripey
was the shah backed by usa though?Yes, and they were even selling iran nuclear equipment back then, infact they offered to sell them fuel reprocessing technology which produces plutonium from spent enriched uranium, and makes far more dangerous bombs. Anyway, I read this earlier :"The Iran/Iraq maritime boundary shown on the British government map does not exist. It has been drawn up by the British Government. Only Iraq and Iran can agree their bilateral boundary, and they never have done this in the Gulf, only inside the Shatt because there it is the land border too. This published boundary is a fake with no legal force. ""Accepting the British coordinates for the position of both HMS Cornwall and the incident, both were closer to Iranian land than Iraqi land"Interestingly, CNN are reporting that the Iranians claim the british boats entered Iranian waters 6 times before they were arrested, a fact which the BBC has no mention of on it's website. Frosty Jack
Excellent news; BBC NEWS | World | Middle East | Iran 'to release British sailors'Iran was in the wrong throughout this entire situation, from the bungled reporting of the Cornwall's co-ordinates to the use of hostages for propoganda purposes. Hopefully this will weaken Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's position further and Iran will get a new leader that isn't quite such an utter scumbag. He was actually deeply unpopular within Iran itself though. He's lost several important elections recently, the economy is suffering, and his allies failed to win any local elections at all. This move could actually be the best thing he could have done. He's showed (to his people) himself to be a strong military leader, yet now wise and benevolent. He could have tried them, but chose to release them. He's basically taken the piss out of Britain, and found an easy way out. Whether it will be enough to save his image with his own people, we'll just have to wait and see. Stripey
Iran's "gift to the british people" (releasing the sailors) is more a gift to tony blair, to give him a way out without losing (too much) face, and just goes to show that Irans government are not idiots. Also, the captured sailors were never "hostages", the americans have been describing them as such in a deliberatly inflammatory manner, much like their use of "regime" to describe the legitemate government of Iran. The rift this has caused between washington and london can only be a good thing.
SteveCrisis
If the sailors had kept to the International Waters Exclusion Zone, none of this would have happened. Stripey
Sky News: 'We Gathered Intelligence'The captain in charge of the 15 marines detained in Iran has said they were gathering intelligence on the Iranians.Sky News went on patrol with Captain Chris Air and his team in Iraqi waters close to the area where they were arrested - just five days before the crisis began. We withheld the interview until now so it would not jeopardise their safety.
