Gear Insurance

Recommended Posts

Hey,

Does anyone know any places that cover musical instruments (guitars, amps, effects etc)?

Id like it to be like dedicated insurers, rather than another company covering it (if you get me. . )

I'm not 100% sure if the household insurance covers the actual value of said equipment.

So i'd like somewhere that will insure to the proper value of the item, rather than give up to a certain amount.

Also i'd also prefer to be covered for within gigs, in the car etc.

Cheers for anyone who can help me

For any musical equipment over the value of 1000, insure it seperately. House Insurance won't do the trick.

All of my guitars and amp are insured seperately and to their full retail value.

There are several companies that do cover. House insurance will cover in the home at least . If it got damaged at a gig, I suppose you could say it happened in the hoose, but if it got stolen from the car, or a gig I don't know. I just got a 1400 quid claim for an Ovation which got damaged in the house...although the wife got hold of the cheque first....bugger. However, as AOD say's it's better to get a company which caters for the guitar player etc. Once you do contact them you will find a sliding scale of cost's for cover. Just pick one you are happy with.

Sorry I can't remember any of the names of the companies, but I'm at work so have no access to my guitar related info stash.

Yeah, my guitars are covered on the house insurance, within the house at least, if anything happens at a gig I'm screwed.

I just have to list them all individually on the policy and say what they are worth.

That said, playing The Moorings fills me with dread - they make you leave your gear in the cellar with loads of people coming and going, not good.

There's a bunch of specialist insurers who will cover your gear whether at home or out gigging etc.

I'm looking at this just now for insuring my gear......got an online quote from Allianz Cornhill for 165 to insure 6000 worth.....including losses from an unattended vehicle.

Not as expensive as I thought it would be.

but always read the fine print on the policy- most insurance companies cover you at home as part of a homeowners or renters policy, and you can get a rider for travelling BUT, there can be exceptions for gear used for professional purposes, or if it's in an un-attended vehicle but not kept in the boot and out of site. Always worth reading the fine print. Oh, most places need appraisals if you've got especially valuable gear, some have the option of a 'fit for purpose' replacement, meaning they could replace my '74 strat with a brand new squire because to the insurance company they were 'the same'. Obviously not a company that's insuring my stuff.

Musicians Union is a great idea- plus you get all that union stuff behind you if you need contracts or legal help, and you get liability insurance too, in case some idiot impales himself accidentally on the business end of a strat.

I've always thought that losing a guitar would be the pits. Okay you might get money for it, but some of my guitars are worth more than money to me, if you know what I mean, without getting too soppy of course.! Like I said, I broke my Ovation last year (fell through the top of it) and thought oh well shit happens. But I would be gutted it I did the same to my old cheap acoustic on which I sang my first song to my wife on.
