Lunar eclipse right now

um, not really...the entire moon was engulfed in the earth's shadow. how can you not be even a little impressed by that?

I was a little excited when it started. And by the time it fully engulfed the Moon I was hoping for a lunar ring around the planet that was covering it. but no. Just darkness. I can get the same excitment in a cupboard!

Yes...we watched it for a while, but unfortunately there was a big cloud overhead, so the impact was lessened.

Yup, I'm just along the road from you so I guess I would have been viewing from about the same angle, couldn't see anything so went back inside to watch Match of the Day.

You thought that another planet had moved between the earth and the moon?! Saturn maybe?

And it wasn't just darkness. it went an eerie Martian red.

Did I read correctly that someone thought another planet was eclipsing the moon? As in a planet being BETWEEN the Earth and the moon? oh dear.....

So for ignorant people: during a total lunar eclispe - the moon's orbit bring it into the Earth's umbral shadow (as in the Earth blocks all direct sunlight from reaching the moon.

I say direct sunlight, because the Earth's atmosphere reFRACTS light from the sun towards the moon, but only light in the orange/red wavelength's is of a long enough wavelength for this refraction to occur (this is the reason the sky is blue, all the shorter wavelenghts are scattered in the atmosphere...).

So during totality the moon appears an orange or blood red colour and is quite spectacular to watch!

Now you know, the next one is 21st February next year i believe...
