Guest DustyDeviada
I'm pretty suprised Little Miss Sunshine is up for best picture.having seen it, I'm not! Great film, saw it in one of those free preview screenings at The Belmont. In fact I'm going to another tonight, Bobby. Yes, I am a cheapskate. The nom for Letters from Iwo Jima was more of a surprise, can't remember the last time a foreign language film was nominated in that category, although I'm sure it has happened. qzdiablo
mark wahlberg's nomination is a great shout, he pretty much stole every scene he was in in "the departed"i don't understand all the praise that is being directed at babel thoughirritu is the least subtle director ever (OH NOES GUNZ R BAD LALZ) and he is essentially recycling the fragmented narrative gimmick he employed in his past two features
Chris
mark wahlberg's nomination is a great shout, he pretty much stole every scene he was in in "the departed"Agreed, although I'm still suprised as everyone had been saying DiCaprio would get a best supporting nomination for The Departed. AKMartin
Spielberg, Lucas, Scorsese, Cameron and Scott.Subtle? No. Successful? Yes. Great film-makers? Yes.Inarritu is one of the most exciting directors around at the moment. Apart from Nolan, PT Anderson and Aronofsky, I can't think of anyone whose films I'd make a point of going to see, just going on his track record so far.The Oscar winners are very predictable this year though:Film: The DepartedActor: WhitakerActress: Helen MirrenDirector: Scorseseunless Babel wins film/director. which would be a shock but not undeserving.AKM
Diesel
Why is Will Smith in there? He's a likeable lad and a competent actor - but he's ALWAYS Will Smith, regardless of the movie or role.

Spoonie
mark wahlberg's nomination is a great shout, he pretty much stole every scene he was in in "the departed"that is the truth, preacher man! will smith is excellent in the pursuit of happyness, but out of those i've seen i'd take whitaker for the win. /x
Diesel
mark wahlberg's nomination is a great shout, he pretty much stole every scene he was in in "the departed"Wahlberg's is very good in his role, but I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Alec Baldwin contribution (I do appreciate that he's not on the nominations list) - he was excellent, his character was wound so tight that you expected him to blow as gasket at any time
A.Pel
I haven't seen any of those films so my knowledge is poor but...''Children of Men (2006): Alfonso Cuarn''...directed Harry Potter and the Prison of Azkaban.
Spoonie
i really enjoyed children of men but quite a few of my friends who i expected to didn't rate it at all. strange. /x
Hardcore Mel
Letters From Iwo Jima had the release put forward in time for Oscar season to snag Clint Eastwood a nomination for director, and there's talk of him pinching the Oscar from Scorcese again. But Robert Altman never one an Oscar until the lifetime achievement one and he was an outstanding director.
KarmaTsunami
my shouts/preferencesbest film - the departed OR little miss sunshine....both outstanding films worthy of the wee gold manbest actor - after seeing peter o' toole last night in 'venus' he gets my vote, but forest whitaker is in with the biggest chance.best actress - judi dench could take it from mirren if her performance in 'notes on a scandal' is everything it's being hyped up to be.supporting actor - i want alan arkin to win it. he was brilliant. failing that, i hope whalberg gets it.supporting actress - little miss sunshine gets my vote again - abigail breslin for the win!director - scorsese. and it would be about fucking time. if eastwood steals it from under him again i'm going to see to it that i get to spit on his grave. however, as opposed to say, eastwood stealing it...i think the surprise win could go to paul greengrass for 'united 93'. black_matter
the inclusion of borat made me laugh. Here's hoping they win it so they can have a really hilarious acceptance speech.
Hardcore Mel
Scorcese finally won! The guy was the reason I went to film school when I was 17. I've never felt so moved during the awards in the entire time I've been watching them. Welling up I was!Glad Pan's Labyrinth got credits where it really deserved it. KarmaTsunami
Abso-fucking-lutely delighted that Scorcese won the awards, I actually cannot stress how happy I am that he FINALLY won the best picture AND director awards. I'm glad Pan's Labyrinth won several, but I'd have liked to see it win 'Best Foreign Language Film'. And a big well done to Helen Mirren, a very deserved win!! Guest DustyDeviada
If only I were a betting man.Console yourself in the knowledge that the results were so predictable you would have got crap odds.Good for Scorsese, but although The Departed is excellent, there's no way it's up there with Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas or even The King of Comedy or Casino. The Departed winning Best Picture while Goodfellas gets beat by Dances With Wolves just highlights what a load of crap the Oscars are.
