Yer I've noticed that too. Also normally when you exit the browser when you come back only new posts are bolded, but it's not updating itself or something.

i think if you press 'back' on the browser it doesn't mark the threads as read. apart from that i dunno... maybe if you were looking at dodgy porn or something then deleted your history, temporary files etc it would do that. or maybe it's a problem with the site if other people have the same problem... seems to be ok with me.

Every time you've finished reading the forums click Options then 'Mark Forums Read', next time you sign in it'll only show you posts from the last time you did that.

ok cheers that seems to have sorted it for now but why did it stop doing it automatically?

It still is doing it automatically, but your web browser is caching the pages. See for yourself - read a thread you haven't read before, go back and list the threads. It should still be bold - refresh the page - it won't be bold.

Because as I said in the thread I linked to a couple of posts above, I've changed the system so that now all threads you read are tracked in the database and not in cookies on your computer(s). So regardless of where you login to aberdeen-music from, it should display the same read and unread threads. I think this is a better system personally, as it should be completely consistent.

ok well, now when i read a forum the ones i have read are unbolded, the ones i have not read are still bold even after i have closed the browser and come back to the page, this never used to happen and is annoying

This is the way it's meant to work as I've already explained above. You can now easily tell which threads you have read and which you haven't - regardless of the computer you use.

Yeah, it does do what it says on the tin now I suppose.

I don't suppose you could offer both options in the search dropdown? Just call the old method something else?

Nope, it's one or the other I'm afraid. It's a single configuration option - either track what people are reading in cookie files on their computer(s) or in the web site's database. There is no point doing both.

its really annoying me now

Cant you at least put something in where all posts over 3 days old are unbolded because there are some threads which i do not want to read(surprisingly enough) and before they used to unbold when i viewed the forum.

No.

Why not just mark all the forums read when you're finished reading everything you want to read?

Because thats a more annoying way of doing it, it was perfectly fine before, sometimes improvement does not change make Neil!

Well if you're not going to do anything about it at least make the "mark all threads read" button more accessible

for example

The new way is annoying

Hmm...okay, apologies then. This looks like a bug somewhere as I definitely have the link under my Options menu...I shall investigate further...

Christ, does this mean everyone has just been using the other Mark Forums Read link on the home page? Or can other people see the link?

If you go to the forums home page ( http://www.aberdeen-music.com/forums/index.php ) you will see the Mark Forums Read link right at the bottom of the page, under Today's Birthdays.

I've checked the code and every user (as long as they are logged in) should see the Mark Forums Read link under the Options menu. And it has been a link under that menu long, long before I made any changes to how read threads and posts are recorded. In fact, it's probably been in that menu since the last web site overhaul.
