Benji Posted November 29, 2006 Report Share Posted November 29, 2006 In addition to Kai's press haul, I have some concerns about the disillusion of what prison means.Firstly, we all know that prison is for the legally challenged and it's an institution that is meant to rehabilitate/reform people who break the law. Only from what I can gather over the last few months it's really not living up to the system that keeps us scared anymore. It's turned into a clinic. A Shelter. A holiday?People are no longer scared of the law but of the criminals that roam our streets with a seemingly free rein and the arsenal of a minor battalion - and at any point, day or night, we could become the next victim to these thugs, druggies, and cliche wannabies of the film culture that can impose their version of what the law is.. or isn't as it may be. People are scared to open their doors, walk the streets, and generally live out their lives without the notion of trust.Something big needs to be done. A complete overhaul of our justice system needs to take place and somehow the streets need to be given back to the people who don't walk them anymore. It's a sham of a system where Murderers are given unjustified life sentances of 14 yrs - but serving 7 of them, and given all the perks that a law abiding citizen can't afford because they pay the taxes that keep these criminals on 3 square meals a day.And now. Fucking junkies are above the average man on the street. They can earn money for quitting the smack and get reformed in prison only for them to enter back into society and realise that it's better off for them to stay in jail - and so the perpetual cops and robbers cycle shall continue untill they make the choice to stop taking heroin. Why the hell should they be rewarded for stopping the drug they chose to take and chose to live under the belt of society, I find it very unnerving and wholly insulting to those who make the choice not to break the law.There's a conspiracy in thier somewhere Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Thats something new, and tbh, they might as well give it a go but don't forget The prisons are mostly supposed to punish people for crimes they have committed, by taking away their liberties...... KatyS Posted November 29, 2006 Report Share Posted November 29, 2006 prison is supposed to do four things really - it is supposed to be a deterrent that acts as a threat and prevents people from commiting crime in the first place (it obv doesn't do this). it is also supposed to be a place to keep people who are dangerous away, to protect society (which again obv doesn't work as people are let of prison after relitevly short sentances) it is also supposed to punish criminals (but again to many people in prison it is a step-up from what they're used to) and finally it is supposed to re-habilitate (which it totally doesn't do as most prisons are full of more drugs than on the streets etc)so yeah, prisons are shit. cooli guess this is backed up by the fact that about 80% of criminals re-offened within two years.so what do you all think is a better alternative?
