Swingin' Ryan Posted October 13, 2006 Report Share Posted October 13, 2006 extras was really good last night. i don't think they're portraying andy as homophobic just as a normal 'bloke' who is perhaps uncomfortable with people thinking he's gay. i think it's an honest portrayal and shouldn't be caught up in (and it's strange for me to say this as i'm normally first to attack those using this) political correctness. it's funny and certainly not offensive.Spot on. I've been a fan of Ricky Gervais and Steve Merchant's stuff for ages and a lot of their humour is based in social awkwardness (even a lot of the things they spoke about on their XFM radio show). The fact that Andy is not a Homophobe is what makes it even more awkward for him, if he genuinely was prejudiced, he would have been more direct and ignored the gay guys talking to him before the show. What makes it funny is the fact he's torn between trying to fit in with 'the lads' and not offending the gay men he knows, and ultimately fails at both. Going by some of the more serious stuff they've done on The Office and Extras, I'm sure they could do something really good.i agree i think if you look at both series, there's always undertones to them (like the is andy millman gay thing). they might do a christmas special like in the office to tie things up.
