the new aberdeen union "the hub"

Opening in time for Freshers' week I believe. Not that I spend enough time at the King's College campus for it to be of any real significance to me...would prolly be alot better if it were in the city centre but there's not really scope to have a centre of that size anywhere other than on campus I guess.

Should be good for the general student body though, they seem to have covered all the bases.

As a regular of Eat at Johnston, I asked Margaret (the coolest dinner lady possibly in the world) fit aa this 'Hub' malarky wiz aboot. She told me it wiz gan to be a foodcourt place, and that Eat would close down once it was open. She never said anything about it being the new Union?

Is it really?

As far as I've been told Bar Pivo (which is now 'technically' the Union but is just a rubbish pub) is only available to the university on a short-term lease. 'The Hub' is on the site of the old refectory which got ripped apart due to major asbestos problems amongst other things. Not sure if it's technically / officially going to be 'The Union' or not. It should be opening in September, but I understand that it will be primarily be a restaurant / cafe type eatery rather than a late night pub/club venue - I don't think there's any chance of nightclub type shenanigans a la 'The Factory' as King's Campus is too out of the way and local residents kicked up a stink about noise etc - as a result it won't have a late license, at least initially. It was initially also going to be housing several university facilities such as Student Accomodation and other SA bodies, not sure if this is still the case.

On a related note, allow me to don my rose-tinted specs: I feel genuinely sorry for new students coming to Aberdeen as they no longer have access to the Gallowgate Union. It was such a great unique building and I saw so many great bands there(The Needles causing a power failure anyone?) and enjoyed so many amazing nights in The Dungeon, Sivells, The Loft etc. It seems it's essentially all part of the University's drive to almost totally remove any presence from Marischal College and its environs except for its retention of the Mitchell Hall. I just think it's quite sad, but then I suppose needs must in the current financial climate...

because no one goes there and it's over priced for a student union

£1.50 for all drinks on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays?

£1 for all spirits and mixers on a Thursday?

Double spirits for an extra pound on Tuesdays?

Two cocktails for £3.50 between 5 and 7 every day?

If that's too expensive for you, I'd love to go to the pub you drink in!

Aberdeen Union is reopening in Fresher's week and will be open until next summer holidays and possibly beyond. The lineup for those looking for entertainment is:

Tuesday night : Batman & Robbie's movie, music and TV pub quiz.

Wednesday night : Johnston vs Crombie Halls of Residence Championship!

Thursday : Open mic night.

Friday : Phat & Deck's Friday night takeaway, live DJs playing all the cheesecore classics, with prizes and giveaways galore!

More ideas are in the pipeline for the weekends as well.

Plus cheap food all day, pool tables and live sport on big screens.

AND hot, young impressionable students just waiting to be sexually educated. What more could you want from a pub?

That's a pity, it would shave minutes off the time between leaving my house and my first drink.

I quite like Pivo/The Union, it is undeniably cheap, and Elwood's right about the girls...

I thought the ref was being gutted and turned into the new ref, just newer and nicer not really a complete change of use. An on campus union would be good for visiting while at uni, but not as good for the rest of the time, I can't see too many people going there instead of into town, a lot simpler just to get the bus into town and have all the other clubs and bars nearby if you feel like a quick change of drinking scenery

I am wandering what the ref will be like now, the lounge upstairs was rather cool (in its kinda old and shabby style) and the jukebox was mighty, I am guessing that sadly it will either be gone completely now, or updated with new music as opposed the the actually quite good selection there before, that is if they haven't found a whole new use for hte floor, I liked it as a place to hide during the day away from any learning or other such nonsense

Oh, and the palacial sized toilets that always amused me, probably turned into normal sized ones now...

I missed ever using the old union, but it looked rather cool having a big place in the city centre to use for whatever reasons

I never got to use teh old union either, and Id never bother going to the supposed union thats in town. The old refectory sounded pretty good like. I was under the impression that it will just be a cheap place to eat but updated.

I've only been to the Aberdeen Union a couple of times so can't really comment, but it did seem to be full of posers. I'll have to make a point on going back though. RGU Union's always been good to me, always another group of folk you know seem to be there.

There was a good part of the Aberdeen Uni website with detailed plans of The Hub but I can't seem to find it now. Could be a nice wee place. I think there's going to be a TV room kinda thing with international stations on. How exciting.

hmm, i worked on that place while i was a sparky. that was about 3/4 months ago and we had a deadline of end july. which we were all sceptical (sp?) about.

it looks like its going to be pretty big, if you guys are allowed upstairs to the top floor especially. the design on the top floor is cool as fuck.

there were HEAPS of data points going in. so thats either for computer terminals or tills. im thinking probably a mixture of the two.

But The Union isn't actually the student's union, it's just a pub called The Union. You'd need a student card or have to be signed in if it was just for students. I didn't go to the old union much either but at least there it was friendly and had a good atmosphere. It's pisses me off that nothing has been done with the building yet, it's been closed for nearly 3 years and if nothing else it must be wasting heaps of money.

I miss the Ref though, there's not really anywhere to eat on campus where you can get decent food and sit in and that is big enough to guarentee you a seat.

The place at Johnston was heaps cheap - and had plenty of seating! And it had the friendliest staff ever... thankfully, they're moving to the Hub this year too :)

It would be pretty cool if they opened it for like socialising and stuff at night. Go from the library to the Hub.... sounds like a plan :D
