How comes?

Simple' date=' it's just about as close to absolute cinema perfection as a film could be. Actor for actor it's one of those films that just sucks you in from the start yet it's not glorified violence or anything and the ending is pretty much like a tragedy.

I do, mostly because it's the exact same story, but set in a casino.

I suppose City of God & Nikita should also count.

Lock Stock + Twa Smoking barrells is the authentic choice.

Goodfella's' date=' Godfather's.. their all the same film.[/quote']

Like I said earlier, each to their own, but Snatch, Lock Stock & Revolver are, IMHO, a triumph of style over substance. Mockney Guy tries to cram as many wacky characters into his movies as is possible and all that wanky cut & shut, slam-bang camera work just gives the viewer a headache.

They are entertaining in their own clumsy, adolescent way and are no doubt lapped up by Big Brother viewers & Sun readers alike.

I was quite impressed with Brick Top though - he was pretty scary, but would have been terrifying in a more serious movie - my pedigree chums.

Good call whoever mentioned "City of God" - it was fantastic.

I really like The Untouchables when I saw it but I have to admit that I haven't seen that many Gangster films so I'm no expert of the subject.

I used to love it, but it hasn't aged well.

I do' date=' mostly because it's the [u']exact same story, but set in a casino.

Goodfellas - Kid wants to be a gangster, kid grows up and becomes a gangster, gains a friend who is a nutter who tends to beat people up for no reason, crew carries out huge heist, one top guy becomes paranoid and kills off crew, kid starts dealing drugs against wishes of head man, gets caught, rats out top guys, into witness protection.

Casino - Successful gambler is given casino in Las Vegas to run, his psychotic friend who tends to beat people up is sent out to assist with sorting out any problems, gambler meets hooker and falls in love, she doesn't love him, is still involved with her ex-pimp/boyfriend, psycho mate's activities bring FBI focus on casino, psycho mate shags gambler's hooker wife, gambler tries to prevent daughter being taken away by hooker wife, psycho mate beaten to death by former colleagues as bosses back home are fed up of trouble he is causing, gambler returns to small time gambling as casino fell on it's arse due to careless record keeping of minor intermediate gang member.

So in terms of having a psycho who beats people up as a character, yes it's the same plot, otherwise, lazy comparison....

Aye - Big Tam is, as always, a liability with his appalling "Irish" accent, although his "just like a fuckin' Wop to bring a knife to gunfight" line is priceless.

Kevin "Mumbly" Costner is as overatted as they come.

Andy Garcia is watchable though.

It's interesting (to me, anyway) that "Road to Perdition" potrayed Frank Nitti (Capone's "enforcer") as a smooth business man and cast Stanley Tucci in the role whilst "Untouchables" had him as a sneering, weasley type and had b-movie actor Billy Drago play him. The contrasts were miles apart.

I watched The Hills Have Eyes remake the other night, Billy Drago crops up as Papa Jupiter, think that's the only film other than Untouchables I've seen him in!

A quick stroll through imdb reveals that the only other film I would have seen him in is Pale Rider.

A shame, cause he was good in The Untouchables.

As for Casino/Goodfellas I think they are quite similar, at least in terms of "feel".

I can't believe no-one has mentioned Brighton Rock!

It's a REALLY old movie with luvvie-darling Sir Dickie Attenborough as a very convincing baddie. Also notable for the presence of William Hartnell - the very first Dr Who - Christ!!! I know some useless shit o_O

What's significant about "Brighton Rock", I think, is that the book was very topical at the time it came out, dealing with the razor-gang issues. I suppose it was the English counterpart to "No Mean City".

Great book, great movie.

What? Have you even watched them? Aside from the main characters being criminals of Italian descent they're completely different.

I would tend to agree - there are similarities in the structure and production of both movies (tracking shots, info subtitles, voice-overs) - but I think that the casting of two of the main actors - especially Pesci in a similar shouty, violent & funny role - from the Goodfellas hasn't helped Casino's own identity.

Sopranos

All,

Here's one for all you Sopranos fans...name gangster movies that the cast of the Sopranos have played in. I'll accept also accept cast members who have played gangster roles in other movies. You can name the actor or their Soprano character name....

Please avoid using IMDB or any other movie or Soprano site

Here's some starters for 10...

Tony Sirico (Paulie Walnuts) - Goodfellas

Vincent Pastore (Big Pussy) - Gotti, Revolver

Lorriane Braco (Dr Jennifer Melfi) - Goodfellas

Michael Imperolati (Christopher Moltisanti) - Goodfellas

Steve Buscemi (Tony Blundetto) - Things To Do in Denver..., Reservoir Dogs

Robert Loggia (Feech La Manna) -

Yeah.....an excellent one!! Brilliant ending, too (although different from the book......I've a feeling the author of the book, Graham Greene did the screenplay as well, but I may be wrong). In the book the whole message is played on the record-your-own-voice disc, but in the film it sticks at "I love you", to give a happier ending.

Goodfellas is about the rise and fall of a gangster (and a mob), Casino's about the fall of a gambling empire. Many hints of the American Dream, then the same being reversed... rags to riches. Although the other characters are great, they are pretty much tales from the "hero's" perspective. Joe Pesci plays almost the exact same character, it's possible to read hints of parody in the Casino role. The wife figure is only really used to tell us more about the leading males, again. The musical scores are also VERY similar.

As pointed out before they also look and feel very similar, the only big difference I reckon is the Pace, Casino's far too dragged out and excessive.

Most gangster filmes tend to deal with a rise and fall plot device - Scarface being another example. I don't find them very similar at all other than possibly visual style and use of songs in the soundtrack but each to their own opinion and all that.
