Goodfellas is the best, everyone knows that, though honourable mentions for Godfather 1 & 2 and Donnie Brasco and Carlito's Way.

The Usual Suspects is good, but I wouldn't class it as a gangster film in the classic sense.

Some good movies listed so far.

How could I forget "Once upon a time....." and "Carlito's Way" ?

Good entries so far, although "Things to do in Denver...." sucks big donkey cocks. It's a poor Tarantino knock-off - shame, coz it's a great cast and Treat Williams' "Critical Bill" character deserves a better movie. Still, each to his/her own.

Not a movie (would be the longest in history if it was), but the entire Sopranos series is right up there with Goodfellas & Godfather I/II. The programme has a level of consistency matched only by The Simpsons for continued quality.

Speaking of Goodfellas - has anyone seen the special edition interview with the real Henry Hill? - Fascinating stuff. He sums up his gangster life by saying that real Wiseguys spent their whole lives walking around basically shitting themselves - and looking at the fates of some of the characters in both factual and fictional gangster movies - I'm not surprised.

Bullshit, the Simpsons has been crappy since Seaon 9. The new episodes are just woeful, nothing like it's heyday.

Whereas The Sopranos has been ace from start to finish.

Ps - That's two hours now and I'm shocked none of the usual pedants have been on here telling us that it wasn't Scotch it was a bottle of something else....

Brilliant dialogue....

"it's verbals or frostbite"

"Why Colin? he wouldn't have hurt a soul.....well, only when it was necessary....and it was always quick"

Long Good Friday for me by a mile. I can't think of a single gangster film made after 1980 except Mona Lisa that's any good though for me, those abysmal Guy Ritchie and similar mockney ones all just desperately want to imitate Friday and Get Carter.

Reminds me of a story about Michael Caine and Bob Hoskins meeting at a party once and Caine saying "Bob you know there's only been three good British gangster films ever made. There was The Long Good Friday that you were in, Get Carter that I was in...and there was Mona Lisa... which we were both in."

Not really a Goodfellas fan, it's a bit too self-indulgent and over stylised for me: I didn't believe a word of it.
