Paul Gleason appeared in more than 60 films

US actor Paul Gleason, whose most famous roles included Trading Places and The Breakfast Club, has died of a rare form of lung cancer aged 67.

Gleason appeared in more than 60 films, often playing authority figures, including the angry head teacher in 1980s hit The Breakfast Club.

His more recent roles included cameo parts in Friends and Seinfeld.

"Whenever you were with Paul, there was never a dull moment," said his wife Susan Gleason.

Among Gleason's other film credits were Die Hard, Johnny Be Good, Van Wilder and Not Another Teen Movie.

He was a minor league baseball player before turning to acting, learning from the late Lee Strasberg at the famous Actors Studio in New York.

His wife said the cancer that killed him was one that was often linked to asbestos.

Trading Places

His best role has to be as the crooked private investigtor in "Trading Places".

Love that scence where he's talking on the phone in one of those open-air booths, doing some underhand dealings, and there's an impatient woman standing just too close to him.

He says politely "please excuse me one moment" turns to the woman and casually says "Fuck Off".

You need to see the scene, it's the restraint that makes it funny.

Funniest scene ever. Or at least one of them.
