Flyposting Pillars to be Erected Around Town

Was reading the Aberdeen Citizen - the free paper that clogs up your letterbox - on the throne this morning and I see they're going to be putting up "pillars" around town for gigs & local events to be advertised.

they're going to be on Belmont Street, Justice Mill Lane, West North Street and a few other places I can't remember.

About time, I say.

they'd have to catch them first

Not difficult to track down a band or venue being that all the information of where you can find the 'offenders' is on the poster!

Bout time an all for this to happen. Walk along almost any street in Glasgow and the hordings or boarded up shop windows are 'ligitimately' covered in large posters giving the impression and the sense of a vibrancy to the city. Come to Aberdeen and unless you are buying a cd or going for a cofee at Kilau, or already at gig, then it doesn't appear if there is much happening... Maybe why it seems like a dull city to visit...

Odds on them being dominated by local corporate owned nightclub promotion, anyone? I know it's a cynical view, but I don't believe for a minute that they're not going to have a part of the pie.

Edit : aren't "flyposting pillars" a terribly dated concept? Some sort of video screen advertising would make far more sense...couldn't they use the information terminals instead?

no, it wouldn't make far more sense. Power failure, vandalism, disabled people, only one person can use the info points at a time whereas posters can be read quickly by a large amount of people at the same time.

Sometimes technology cant improve a tried and tested method very much if at all

I don't see what's so wrong about fly posting. I believe it gives cities a bit of character.

Having pillars dedicated to fly posting is just a waste of time and money in my book.

Of course, you can't have posters everywhere, and I understand that, but to be honest, I think that "illegal" fly posting is fine.

how do you regulate it then? how do you stop having it "everywhere" but keep it fine?

Where the hell did you read in this that they will be for gigs' date=' or will even definitely be going up? (as you have stated!!!)

Local interest only = monster trucks and the circuis....[/quote']

firstly, i'm assuming it will include gigs - you pay your money, you advertise your event, I would presume. Secondly, I wrote the first post from memory over a briefly scanned article while I was having a dump, so apologies for not having 100% accuracy there.

Anyway, ignoring my first post, the scanned copy is there to show everyone what it said, clarify points & provoke debate over flyposting.

So, basically, get the fuck off your high horse and contribute something meaningful rather than post your usual shite & come across as a pedantic, petty cunt.

Rather than having pillars' date=' possibly designated walls/areas around town where it would be acceptable?[/quote']

There's probably a fear that once you give people an inch, they'll end up taking a mile. Aberdeen doesn't really suffer at all with flyposting, I'm sure I'm not the only one who likes it that way. I wouldn't disagree with designated areas, but..is there anywhere for them to really go up?

To me, the pillars reek of a political compromise. I might see if I can get hold of the plans for them, though. Anyone got an pointers on who to contact within the Council?

they do - but let's face it, they're better than fuck all.

And i'm not really a fan of flyposting everywhere and everywhere - it can look untidy and damages the sight of some beautiful buildings.

Here's the opening gambit from "No Logo" by Naomi Klein -

http://books.guardian.co.uk/firstchapters/story/0,6761,402483,00.html

'As a private person, I have a passion for landscape, and I have never seen one improved by a billboard. Where every prospect pleases, man is at his vilest when he erects a billboard. When I retire from Madison Avenue, I am going to start a secret society of masked vigilantes who will travel around the world on silent motor bicycles, chopping down posters at the dark of the moon. How many juries will convict us when we are caught in these acts of beneficent citizenship?'

David Ogilvy, founder of the Ogilvy & Mather advertising agency, in Confessions of an Advertising Man, 1963

I want gigs and events to be advertised but, personally, I'd rather that every wall, tree & window wasn't turned into a billboard.

I think part of the problem is that people just don't advertise their gigs to begin with - so regardless of what the council come up with, people still have to go to the effort of advertising. Personally speaking, I wouldn't pay the council more than a token sum (couple of quid?) to put up posters on those pillars - not when there's masses of places available to poster in for free.

To me, flyposting just represents taking the lazy way out - it's not big or clever, and it doesn't inspire me to attend anything. Kef were/are particularly bad for sticking random posters up on walls - and every time, the fact that it's been flyposted just makes me ignore what the poster is saying. I'm sure I'm not alone in that respect, either.

I remeber Flash made a lot of noise on here about venues cooperating with posters - has anything happened on that front?

What would be nice would be if the Council could put up something like a daily listings poster in a few places, listing everything that's on in Aberdeen that day/night. That way, if you were out and about, you could stop by one of the points and view the posters to see what's on that day - and to me, that would make far more sense than pillars.

But these masses of free places are mostly in venues themselves, so they don't really reach anyone except the regular gig goers.

It takes a lot of time and effort to produce daily listings, certainly more time, effort and co-operation than it takes to put up a few posters. At least with the new ekiosks you have access to the internet and the GCGuide

I don't see where it says you can pay to advertise you poster on the pillars either!

I'll contribute something meaningful...LEARN TO READ!

Maybe you should take your own advice about reading, especially the bit where he says "I would presume", or don't you know that word?
