Paulscoconutass
I've noticed a few people with Russ Meyer avatars as of late and i'm wondering why so many people like his stuff. So far i've bought Faster Pussycat and Vixen, which were both utter gash (no pun). I've seen a few other and i'm guessing he: * Loves big tits and incest.* Doesn't want to make proper pornos.* Thinks he can write comedies.* Thinks "satire" is cool to defend his later films. Can anyone explain why he was so successful? Metarie
The whole 60s kitsch thing has been really popular for the last few years so Russ Meyer is cool for the same reason Bettie Page is. Neither did anything particularly amazing or different but they've got names people remember for whatever reason.
Guest bluesxman
Was he actually 'successful' in the grand scheme of things? Like the aforementioned John Waters, his films are pretty much likely to either amuse you or leave you cold and are very much a cult concern. For both of these directors I can appreciate some of their films and think others are utter pish. I wouldn't try to read too much into his career personally. As far as my avatar goes, I like Faster Pussycat, it's cheesy and badly acted but Tura Satana looks cool and the music is good. I need no other reasons, i'm nae that deep. Guest bluesxman
There was one of his dvds in the Virgin 3.99 sale' date=' can't remember which one.My favourite one is the one with guy that can only shag girls up the a**e.[/quote']Supervixens is in FOPP for a fiver. That and Faster Pussycat are the only 2 I have any desire to own. That's 'Beneath The Valley Of The Ultravixens' you refer to I think. Guest MKII
I think the films are crap as well, but the visuals appeal to the dirty bastard part of me! Mmmm, Christy Hartburg!

Bettie Page pushed the boundaries of pin-up modelling by entirely controlling her own career. She was one of the first celebrity glamour models. She was a business woman at the front of everything and made all her own decisions, often hiring her own photographers and selling the pictures on. She also pushed the boundaries of fetish modelling and helped inch S & M a little bit more into the mainstream with her spanking and bondage pictures.Russ Meyer made a career out of not giving a fuck. He appreciated beauty and loved sex, so he made films about it. Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls is one of my all-time favourite films because it's so out there. The ending is entirely ridiculous and unexpected, the soundtrack is killer and way ahead of its time, the colours and the costumes have to be marvelled at. He's still influencing directors and films to this day. Hell, even the Austin Powers movies took so much from that one film, like the line 'It's my happenin baby and it freaks me out!'. These subtle influences go so unnoticed by the majority that people think he was just an over-rated idiot that liked bit tits.

Metarie
Ok. Stepping away, both hands in the air You know more than I do about her, obviously, I guess I just don't get the Bettie Page fascination. I do think she was rather gorgeous and admire her for doing the darker stuff back in the day but I hate the way she's been turned (or turned herself) into a franchise, she's no famous for being a pin up model these days, she's famous for being semi naked on everything from t-shirts to ashtrays. Oversaturation annoys me no end.
Swingin' Ryan
I hate the way she's been turned (or turned herself) into a franchiseShe definitely hasn't done it herself. As far as I know, she was pretty much living as a recluse when the whole Bettie Page revival kicked off, completely unaware of it.
Metarie
yeah, thats what i though, but I assume she allowed her image and name to be used by various people. Having said all this I think the film about her that's coming out might be worth a look.
Hardcore Mel
she stepped away from pin-up modelling at the height of her career, pretty much disappeared, found god, and lived a normal life into old age. i'm not sure what the deal was regarding copyright or anything but i'm pretty sure it was old cheesecake publishers that owned the rights to the pictures and allowed her image to be used as a brand. i remember reading an interview with her about 6 or 7 years ago where someone had managed to track her down and she was completely shocked and overwhelmed.
